Miami Northwestern LB Michael Smith was a breakout star this past season. His success helped him land offers from the likes of Clemson and West Virginia, but last night he received one that he had been waiting for in particular.
“Coach Scott told me to give Coach Golden a call and h (Golden) basically told me they had been waiting to offer me for a while and they were glad I was patient with it. I was excited because they are a childhood favorite and that’s the hometown school,” said Smith.
Although Smith was patient with Miami, doubt was creeping into his mind that the ‘Canes weren’t very high on him.
“It was a little bit of a surprise they offered because I thought they didn’t really have any interest in me.”
The ‘Canes were already in Smith’s top group before the offer, but this solidifies their spot with him.
“It moves them up, but I wouldn’t really say I have a leader. UM is in top three with Clemson and Louisville with West Virginia right there too.”
When does the versatile pass-rusher plan on committing?
“I may do it before the senior season and maybe even earlier. It’s just something I need to talk over with my family.”
The Miami Northwestern star likes how Miami’s class is comprised of all South Florida kids right now.
“South Florida has the most talent in the nation and we all stay home then Miami could be BCS champions again.”
Smith has been busy in the offseason, as he has attended various camps and combines.
“The offseason been great because it has really helped to expose me to people who hadn’t seen me before.”
