Please refresh my memory...what are the benefits to recruit of being a preferred walk on?

They're guaranteed a spot on the team, since they're recruited. I think they get a lot of the same benefits, but have to pay the tuition and other expenses, like regular students.

That could Be pretty huge for us. Dad is very well connected in the football world and has some involvement with the Under Armour all American game.

They get the standard benefits of a varsity athlete: Preferential status for getting your desired class schedule, 2 free tix UM football games, free administration into other UM sporting events, etc. As well, you get an extended opportunity to earn a scholarship as you go thru college, if they continue to develop.

I think they only pay half the tuition. Meals and boarding are taken care of by the school.

Is a PWO eligible to receive academic scholarships? Depending on SATs, with that GPA he may be able to get a decent chunk of tuition paid for him.

Yes. Even athletes on partial scholarship are eligible to receive academic scholarships, should they qualify for them. This is a common tactic for non-revenue sports. College baseball & soccer teams do this regularly.

University of Miami Football Team Advertising For "Any Student That Is At Least 6'1 And 230+ Pounds" | Miami New Times

We were quite embarrassing as a program before Richt, its hard to believe the levels we sank to

It's one area that private schools usually lag behind the behemoth state schools. Good to see us getting some benefit.

This is when the al golden used car corporate training program was in full effect.

Quote from the article:

Coach Golden's philosophy is you're only as good as your worst guy. If you don't have enough big bodies, you've got a problem."

Problem was golden was the worst of the worst....the ******* demeaned the meaning of the word "philosophy ". His philisophy was throwing **** at the wall and claiming genius when it stuck

I do know the walk-on program had deteriorated over the years. Not easy to pull PWOs with Miami's private school tuition costs. You need kids like this who have size and can perform at a reasonably competent and athletic level for scout team. Sometimes these kids develop into quality depth players for special teams or even in the 2 or 3 deep. If he has legit offers from Toledo and Miami (OH) then he'd be a pretty darn good PWO for us. Hope he gets a big fat academic scholarship.
