…just my opinion.

I’ve waited until we played our first 3 ACC games to form my opinion on our Canes at the halfway point of the season.

Our O is obviously elite, thanks in great part to Superman (Killa Cam), and X. Our running game finally dominated today, but it was to be expected, since it was against a very poor run D. Sam Brown finally showed up today, and had his best game by far. Horton has been good to great all season, and Jacolby had a big TD catch and no bone-headed plays or penalties. This O is a National Title contending offense, and the best I’ve seen all season.

Unfortunately, our D and Special Teams are mostly atrocious. Our defensive backfield is simply offensive. Can’t cover, can’t tackle. Big plays galore given up every week. Our D-Line is good against the run, but not getting the kind of pressure consistently considering the talent that we have. LB play has been pretty good , but not great.

Our Special Teams today were negligent. The KO return TD was inexcusable. #15 just stood there watching Lacy, instead of attacking him, and by the time Lacy got to him, he made a horrible attempt at a tackle without having any momentum, and while being flat footed.

Then to compound that, we somehow line up in punt return alignment (instead of punt safe formation) on 4th and 7, and get gashed with a fake punt for 14-yards. All the while I’m screaming at the TV and telling my father-in-law before the play, “they’re gonna run a fake punt”, and of course, that’s exactly what happened. If a dolt like me can know that play was coming, how can our coaching staff get caught sleeping and not be aware of that being a likely possibility? Just mind boggling.

Our D and Special Teams will cost us at least one game down the line, hopefully much later than sooner. Only offense to ever win a title without a dominant D in college football was LSU with Barrow, Jefferson, Chase, etc. probably the most explosive offense in the history of CFB. Only way we win a Conference Title is playing at that level the entire season.

Teams like Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee have mid offenses, but play lights out D. Let’s hope that our D can improve some as the season moves along, as well as our Special Teams.

The referees will ALWAYS be an issue, no way around that. We’re always playing against the other team and the zebras. We will have to accept this as the norm, and play as hard and disciplined as we can to try to mitigate some of the BS.

This CFB title is ripe for the taking. At this point, anyone can lose on any given Saturday. That has been proven. Our Canes have a shot, and after so many putrid years, I’ll take that.
