As you see it, what are the top three issues holding the U below mediocrity right now? I would say that coaches, (Im not sure if the next word I want to use is culture, atmosphere, or facilities), and players in a nutshell. Coaches bring in the wrong kids. Coaches bring in the right kids who then dont get coached up. Admin hired two guys that imo proved they shouldnt have been hired. The Coker hire was understandable vs say Alvarez. Shannon hired from a fired staff is not a good decision imo especially when he had no hc exp. But here we are, lets see if AG can right the ship.

The biggest issue by far is a lack of experienced talent. Good amount of young talent, and the upperclassmen are not very talented on the whole. Should be pretty good again in 2014 unless the NCAA continues its hypocrisy.

1. Larry Coker
2. Randy Shannon
3. Strength & Conditioning (not necessarily placing all of the blame on Swasey, but our players have simply not been strong enough for whatever reason)

1 and 2 have been resolved. We'll see about #3 this year.

1.Coaching
2.Coaching
3.Coaching

Miami will virtually always have good players, but you gotta have the right guy to coach them.
Mid-level programs that have become successful have done it through solid coaching.
Oregon and VT are prime examples of programs who never make a splash in recruiting but have become consistent winners through solid coaching.

1- Terrible, plain awful coaching for a whole decade.
2- The dark clouds of sanctions looming for way too long, the NCAA taking so long to hand them out is just ridiculous.
3- White shoes.

Coker and Shannon are obvious but we sold our souls for the 2001 championship on Coker. It would feel alot better if we hadn't been screwed out of the 2002 title, but that's another discussion. Either way, it sent us into the doldrums.

To the guy who said Miami always has great players and it's all coaching, that's a bit of a fallacy. Coker and Shannon did manage to get some good recruits here and there, but not nearly enough of them. Add to that the country club mentality and alot of those good players turn to crap too.

When you're on top of the CFB world like we were, a good coach keeps that momentum going in recruiting. If we had a guy like Golden that whole time, who knows what could've been. I'd love to see what he can do with a program that's on top. Hopefully, we will but he will have to build it up himself and unfortunately for alot of our fans, he can't just snap his fingers and poof, it's happened. I think that's what some of our fans expect.

1) GEOGRAPHIC & CULTURE OF SOUTH FL (ie; DAYS OF DOMINANCE > PRAYING FOR A WIN IN OUR HOME FU@KIN' STADIUM)

2) STUDENT ATHLETES PLAYING JUST HARD ENOUGH TO PROMOTE THEMSELVES TO THE NEXT LEVEL, NOT FOR THE U...."SOME" OF THEM COULD GIVE 2 ****S LESS WHAT'S STAMPED ON THEIR HELMETS OR UNIFORMS

3) HOW ADMIN MEASURES $UCCE$$ AND HOW OUR IMAGE IS RECEIVED BY CORPORATE $PON$OR$, THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, GRADUATION RATES AND THE NATION....BACK IN THE DAY, THE "ADMIN U" WANTED RID OF THEIR "BAD BOY" IMAGE AND CHOSE TO FLU$H "IT" AND THE $UCCE$$ IT BROUGHT EVERY $ATURDAY....

FAST FORWARD TO BUTCH, COKER AND SHANNON....TO INCLUDE GOLDIE...ALL ARE ADMIN PUPPETS....JUST ASK JJ WHY HE LEFT....

LOOK....WE, AS FANS CAN'T EVEN AGREE ON A SIMPLE TOPIC....POINT? SOME OF US LOVED THE "THUG U" DAYS OF MIAMI FOOTBALL DOMINANCE WHILE OTHERS HATED IT BECAUSE OF THE "IMAGE" IT PORTRAYED....ME? I'LL TAKE NATIONAL TITLES AND SWAGGER OVER FIELD TRIPS TO DISNEY WORLD WITH A BUS FULL OF FU@KIN' RETARDS JUST FOR THE "IMAGE" IT PROJECTS, AND I'LL TAKE IT EVERY SINGLE FU@KIN’ DAY OF THE WEEK.....THAT BAD BOY IMAGE? I EMBRACE IT AND DEARLY MISS IT BECAUSE IT IS & WAS WHAT BROUGHT TEAM PRIDE, UNITY AND PURPOSE TO THIS PROGRAM....OUR "IMAGE" GAVE US OUR IDENTITY…..THE ENTIRE TEAM WAS ACTUALLY PROUD OF WHO THEY PLAYED FOR AND WHAT IT REPRESENTED.....AS A “FOOTBALL PROGRAM”, WHAT IS OUR IDENTITY AND IMAGE NOW?

….AND EVEN THOUGH IT WAS DURING THE COKER ERA, I STILL, TO THIS DAY, LOVE THE FIU BRAWL...WHY? BECAUSE IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD SEEN ANY FLICKER OF PROGRAM PRIDE SINCE COKER WON OUR LAST NC TITLE IN 01.....(PERSONALLY....I STILL, TO THIS DAY, THINK PATA'S DEATH HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THAT.....)

LONG STORY SHORT, $WAGGER HAS A PRICE TAG AND THE U ADMIN IS PAYING THE BILL WHILE US FANS ARE PAYING THE PRICE.....THEY WILL HIRE AND FIRE COACHES LIKE THEY CHANGE UNDERWEAR TO GET AND PROMOTE THE "IMAGE" THEY WANT.....AND WILL DO SO AT THE COST OF 6-6 SEASONS, NEW COACHES OR LACK OF TICKET SALES.....END OF STORY / RANT....

GO CANES!!

We have the same coaching staff as last year. When was last time that happened?

As the others have said in this thread, I think coaching has to be the #1 problem. While our talent level is definitely down from our successful days, I refuse to believe that we've struck out on so many highly-rated, nationally recruited kids. I think the more logical explanation is that the talent we've brought in hasn't developed.

I think the #2 problem has been QB play. Since Kenny D left, our best 3 QB seasons have been Berlin '04, Jacory '11 and Jacory '09? I think looking back, we definitely underappreciated Berlin when you compare him to the last few QBs we've had, but as a team that has run a pro-style offense, we've need either a good distributor or even a solid game manager at QB, and we haven't had that.

I think the #3 problem has been DT play. As a team that has run some variation of a base 4-3 defense for as long as I can remember, we've been at our best as a defense when we've had disruptive DTs. When our DTs blow up plays, it forces everything outside and lets our D use its speed, which has usually been the calling card of Miami defenses. Since big Vince left, we haven't seen great DT play, and I think our defense has suffered as a result

Gat ****, you need a hug

Bicho would like to point out that we have still had many players drafted off these crappy teams lately. And lot of players playing better in the nfl than they did in college like shields. Shanncoker may have been the worst coaches ever. If they were head coaches at a place like virginia they would never win a game.

I think Miami is the most complicated and difficult coaching assignment in the business. It's a small private school with a tiny core fanbase, yet it has a large national following. The administration imposes academic restrictions above and beyond what the NCAA requires, yet we're smack in the middle of one of the worst school districts in the country with an immeasurable amount of athletic talent. We're forced to play home games 30 miles from our campus in one of the most sterile football environments you'd ever see, which is a disadvantage that no other major program has to deal with. Add it all up and a picture begins to emerge. I believe it takes a very specific type of individual to be able to navigate these waters successfully. Beyond that, it's simply coaching and recruiting.

Now, coaching doesn't only mean literally coaching, but being the head of the whole organization ;establishing a presence and tone that trickles down to the assistants and players. How you conduct your press conferences, how you sell your program publicly and privately, the intensity and speed at which you practice- everything stems from the man at the top. It also means player development, on and off the field; psychologically keeping 85 heads mostly in a place to get them to succeed on Saturdays and in the classroom. How do you deal with adversity when it presents itself? What goals do you establish for the physical regimen? There's a whole lot more to it than what goes on for 3 hours 12-14 times a season, though ultimately, it's what happens on those occasions that dictate whether everything else you did was sufficient.

Then recruiting: you recruit the talent and mindset you're looking for. Talent mining in SFla should be seemingly easy, but you have to actively create relationships with the locals to make it easier on yourself. Not all of our coaches have equally worked hard in this area, but it seems like we're getting back to that. Then your HC needs to be the world's best car salesman when talking to an 18-year old whose head is usually filled with images of *****, trim and NFL paychecks. The 2012 class was a giant step forward in this regard and as long as Golden stays true to his word when he took the job of reaching out to all the local high schools, we should be able to consistently pluck the best talent.

I don't really know where I'm going with this, other than I hope Golden, Al is the right man to fill these shoes. We need to start winning now.

well crystallized!

#3 is because of #1 and #2. If they HC doesn't make kids accountable for S&C, there isn't much the S&C coach can hold over them.

Solid post. 1st part really sums it up.

Coaching, defense, and more talent. Looking at the top 25 schools they all have something in common, either beast(s) on offense or beast(s) on defense. While UM has had beast(s) in Hankerson, Miller, TB, Streeter, Bailey, Spence, McCarthy, and Harris they don't now. Perryman and Chickillo are exceptions but they only have had one good year. Hopefully Golden and Co. can WIN first and then find some gems and coach them up.

This shocked me, not by what Bicho said or the fact that he writes in the 3rd person but b/c he didn't write "Bicho is here" anywhere.

But Bicho is right, the coaching sucked. Plain and simple.

Also, our o-line and d-line have sucked for the better part of a decade. As a former o-lineman I know that if you don't control the trenches, no matter how many athletes you have, you are doomed and we lacked in those areas.
