Canes covered the spread with that interception return as time expired. I'll never forget it. I was at the independent sportsbook Santa Anita on the Las Vegas Strip. Dusty place full of nothing but older wise guy bettors. Underdog bettors. They were smoking cigars and didn't particularly care when Miami took the lead in the final seconds. After all, their +6 or +6.5 was safe. When the interception unfolded and the Florida players quit, I was in the back row of the sportsbook along with a new friend from Michigan. Neither one of us had a bet on the game. I was thrilled Miami was going to win. Then as the defender raced toward the end zone, the front row of wise guy bettors jumped to their feet in unison and unleashed the greatest foul mouthed chorus I've heard to this day. They were throwing cigars and everything within reach. My friend and I were laughing uncontrollably. A few of the bettors turned around and threatened us. I didn't particularly care but my friend was a bit more street wise. He whispered to me that this was Las Vegas and you never know what type of connections these guys might have, or how far they'll take a grudge. I listened briefly but then laughed and taunted some more. When the Gators were on the losing end it was more than worth the risk.
Great start for Jimmie. They mentioned Tolbert Bain. He was the DB that later that year let the BC receiver get behind him for the hail Flutie pass.
