We did a poor job of not switching on defense. It’s very hard to play man to man defense against a team that sets so many screens without switching on defense. There is no excuse for not being prepared for this. And for not adjusting during the game.
Even on the 8th grade school and AAU teams I coach we discuss how are we defending screens, and that changes from game to game depending on why that opponent screens. Is it to get to the rim (trap or hedge and recover) or is it to get open 3’s (switch).
I know it’s harder at this level but the principles are the same and we did not do it today.
On offense we need someone who can break down the defense. Pack is a great shooter, as is my nephew, but neither are the type to break down a defense with the dribble and create open looks for teammates. We need one of the young guys to be that. And then I would run a 3 guard offense. Yes a bigger team can expose us on defense but this UM team needs to outscore opponents.
I don’t want to pick out any individual player after this game because I think Coach L did not put the players in a position to win. That does not mean I am happy with the individual contributions. But if the scheme is wrong it is hard to beat a well coached team regardless of talent. See Kentucky under Calipari.
