This Saturday at noon, we will watch a game that hasn’t been played in five years and may never be played again. Although some might say it’s just another big game against a marquee opponent, I believe it could give this program the jolt it’s been looking for since 2005.
In 2008, Nick Saban was in his second season at Alabama. The team had gone 7-6 in his first year and lost to Louisiana-Monroe, a defeat he compared to 9/11 and Pearl Harbor. Alabama opened the next season against Clemson, and most experts picked the tandem of CJ Spiller and James Davis to run all over the Tide. Alabama steamrolled Clemson and won 34-10, setting the tone what would be 10-2 season and a future dynasty.
Saturday is a chance to launch Miami back into national relevance. Miami hasn’t had a ten-win season since 2003 and hasn’t made a conference championship in the ACC. Most of those underachieving Miami teams—’05, ’06, ’07, ’08, ’10, ’11 and ’12 —suffered devastating losses early in the season that killed their confidence. They had NFL talent, but they didn’t have the Tyson-like swagger of that 2001 Miami team.

This Saturday is much more then Miami-Florida match-up. It’s about regaining confidence and showing the world that a new era has dawned in the state of Florida.
It hurts me to say, but the 2008 match up between Miami and Florida was a changing of the guard. Florida began to represent many of the things Miami used to represent to the rest of the nation.
Saturday isn’t just a revenge game for 2008. It is an opportunity to put Miami on top of the state of Florida in the eyes of the recruits. It’s no secret recruits want to be part of a successful program. Florida won the national championship in 2006 and followed that up with four 5 star players and countless 4 stars, including South Florida stud Major Wright. Same thing applies with Alabama. They won the championship in 2009 and followed it up with #1 recruiting class in the nation featuring guys like DJ Fluker, Dre Kirkpatrick and Trent Richardson.
I’ve always believed that college football is about runs. We had our run in the 1980s, then it was Florida State in the 1990s, and Florida in the 2000s. In 2013 and beyond, I believe that Miami will reclaim their title as the top team in Florida.
Hope to see you out there Saturday.
