Hey guys,
I know we have a thread on this already, but I put some pretty detailed notes together for those who do not have access to Watch ESPN.
Here is the link for those that can watch: http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/814774/size/condensed/
1.5 hours - Hosted by Joe Zagacki and Don Bailey Jr
First off, lots of great stuff in here and I suggest everyone give it a listen. Some of the comments are obvious, but there are also some unique comments fr/ members of the staff. Below are some the things I found interesting. Enjoy!
Coach D
First off, Coach D spoke at length and seemed very excited about the talent coming back next year. Does not look like a guy that is phased in the least by the criticism of the Defense. I have some renewed faith in the direction we are heading and believe that each unit can make big strides going into next year.
- Emphasized the players who want to be Canes, the kids who want to come here. Die hard guys. Can't worry about the one who don't wanna be here.
- Deon Bush is up to 197lbs from 185lbs last season
- I am anxious to see what we will get from Alex Figueroa. Coach D said he came in last month at 212, and is already up to 225.
- Bond can play OLB and rush DE. Whenever he calls him, he is always working out - hungry to get here and make an impact.
- Talking about AQM - when Don Bosco played St. Thomas Aquinas this past season, STA coaches said he was the best player they faced all yr.
- Everyone raved about Alex Gall as a person/player. Comes from a powerhouse program in OH (Moeller)
- On National Recuiting: The brand still sells
B. Carroll - S. Coley was still not official when he spoke. Seemed generally excited to be taking over this group of WR's (who wouldn't?)
- Kamalu: Is still growing, 270lbs right now
- RL III: Can play slot, RB, DB. Great kid.
- Pumped up to coach the WRs - Talented, young, hungry
- On James Coley - Won't be a boring offense that's for sure, spread the ball to the playmakers
S. Coley comments by Joe Z. and Don B.
- Can help in the return game, and has been called the #1 WR recruit in the country by some experts.
- Explosive plays. Catches everything with his hands.
- #1 kid in Broward going to UM for the 2nd year in a row (T. Howard).
- 10 touchdowns on 29 catches (every 2.9 catches). He will be featured in this offense.
James Coley
- On Stacy Coley: Can score fr/ anywhere on the field. Very well coached. Requires a lot of defensive attention.
- Stacy Coley wants competition, wants to battle. That is the way it should be.
- Great ball perception, natural hands.
- Great ankle flexion, no wasted movements, never breaks stride, always in position to make a play.
- Two things to look for when evaluating a WR:
1) Does he get open (i.e. are guys draped all over him, or does the guy cause seperation where there are times where he blows past everyone)?
2) Does he catch the ball?
- Stacy Coley does both of these things extremely well.
On the TE's:
- If TE's can have burst fr/ their stance, makes it very tough on LB's. If your TE's have great athleticism, can mismatch with safety's. These guys (Beau/Dobard) have both.
- Beau S. is a huge guy - big head, broad shoulders. Full speed all the time.
- Scheme versatile. Creates separation, drags guys in his highlights.
- Gets vertical - very little wasted movement for his size. Falls forward when tackled. Can stay in for all 3 downs.
- Dobard - 250lbs. Good ball skills.
- When he catches the ball, he puts his foot in the ground and goes vertical, makes guys miss. Great athleticism and balance.
Other comments:
"I only know how to coach the good ones" (Love that line)
On Stephen Morris: He attracts talent. Good players want to play with good players.
Art Kehoe
Has coached 13 NFL O-linemen. Some guys come to college ready to go. Other guys haven't played a lot and need some more time. Coached both tackles for the Ravens (McKinnie and Oher).
All of Miami's success has been driven by competition, knowing the next guy could take your spot if you ***** up. Depth wins championships. Whether its the classroom, weight room, meeting room, always try to compete and win. Makes a good team.
On Stacy Coley - Long, tough, great hands, runs great routes.
Alex Gall: Great kid. Been trying to get kids out of Moeller for 30 years (first time).
- Excellent line coach played for U of Cincy and the Browns. Dad travels a lot, so Gall wasn't as reluctant to leave home as some guys are.
Sonny O - P. Williams covers the prep school recruiting (interesting..).
- Recommended him to Kehoe. Has only played football for 2.5-3 yrs. Was a soccer play and swimmer.
- Gained 50lbs in 2 years.
- Very good flexibility. Thumb to pinky - 12 inches. Highest he has seen. Size 17 shoes. Great student.
- Watched him at Hardgrave practice. Was stretching, sitting on the ground with legs spread and put his nose on the ground forward (very very flexible).
- He will take some time - they will develop him. Amazing person, fun guy.
- Impressive physically, great personality.
- Put him w M. Bunche right away. "Players teaching players."
Knighton: Was a TE and a DE as well. Great family.
- Knows the coach well - said he is old school, hard worker, smart.
- Came in early, so will go through spring. Could get in there "early."
- After two weeks, said "I love Miami. I made the best choice in the world."
Current o-line: Seantrel has not hit his potential yet - really close. Improved a lot.
These were just the interviews posted during the ESPNU 1.5 hour show. There were other interviews with the other coaches as well, but I have yet to find them posted on the Hurricane site.
