Since I've been alive we've had some great running backs. I wasn't too much into recruiting when I was about 10. Just how hyped were these guys out of high school.

In order...?

Gore
Mcgahee
Duke
Portis
Edge
Miller
Davenport
JJ

??

I remember the hype Gore had coming out of high school. Dude was unreal. I remember one game he had like 6 or 7 touchdowns.

Gore was the most hyped especially from the south florida guys. McGahee was highly touted as well. Miller was a 4 star kid, Edge I don't really remember. I know he was mentioned as tearing it up his RS year in practice. I don't know what Portis was rated just that the Gators wanted him as a corner.

Portis had the least amount of hype relative to how good he was. Gainesville wanted to make him a DB. Lol

At the time EJ was probably one of the highest rated RB to ever enroll at UM. Was a high school AA despite only playing 5 games his senior year due to injury. Late signee, played mop up duty the first 2 games of his freshman year and then was going to redshirt due to I believe a wrist injury. However, was pressed into action late in the year due to injuries to Danyell Ferguson and Dyral McMillan. He ran for over 100 yards in his first true action, just in the second half against Temple and then ran for over 100 yards against BC on his way to a then freshman rushing record. Homerun hitter from the start (initially probably tried too much to make a big run every carry): gave the UM faithful something to be happy about in an otherwise dismal year.

Wasn't a lot of internet when Edge came out. After he signed his LOI, I was looking at a list of the top 100 recruits in the country according to one of the newspapers, and Edge was ranked 44th.

Frank Gore's numbers in high school were unreal. There was very little "hype" necessary - the stats were enough.

Willis was ranked among the best in the country also. I don't think Portis was ranked particularly high, or I would probably remember.

Miller was the 7th ranked running back on scout.

Charlie Jones was pretty hyped coming out of HS.

As was Tyrone Moss if I remember correctly. Coaches didn't count on the fact that he was too dumb to pick up the pass protection schemes.

Same reason Hester wasn't used more on offense. According to my roommate, who was a walk-on on the team at the time, they had a play called "Hester go right" and he would f' it up.

Other than maybe Highsmith, Duke is the most hyped running back ever at the U.

Tyrone Moss was a boss in HS. We played them in the playoffs and as a soph had 185yrds in the 1st half. Luckily he got hurt if not they would of probably beat us

From what I remember...

Gore - 4* and hugely hyped by local guys who followed South Florida HS football
Mcgahee - 5* and one of the top two or three RB in the country
Duke
Portis - 3* and unheralded, same as Phil Buchanon
Edge
Miller
Davenport - can't remember, probably 3*
JJ - no clue

I remember Sean Taylor being a 2* for most of the year until the state playoffs, when he shot up to a 4* I believe.

As far as stars, the highest rated was McGahee. He was a five-star on Rivals. Believe he was third in the nation, Sam Maldonado from Ohio State (and later Maryland) was #1. Gore was a four-star but his local hype was comparable to Duke. Portis was pretty under-the-radar, although he was known as a good player.

Edge was a weird recruitment because he was pre-Internet and signed late, but the buzz after he signed was that he was a major stud. The highest rated running back, along with McGahee, was Jason Geathers.

I think he would have been a very good one. Turned out to be an excellent all purpose back, but I suspect CP could have played DB really well also. I suspect the same about Duke, as it has been mentioned here many times, but also based on his effortless acceleration, loose hips, great vision, and fearlessness.

Portis had the least amount of hype relative to how good he was. Gainesville wanted to make him a DB. Lol

Nice bro ,I agree with everything you said! Geathers was highly rated and I still like we misused him! He was a rb all the way!!!

If I recall correctly Danyell Ferguson out of Columbus was as hyped as they came. I think he left Columbus as Dade County's All-Time leading rusher.
