I have known about UM offering lifetime scholarships to players that turn pro early for years but it is nice that now the rest of the nation does. Pres. Shalala is and has been committed to educating UM's student athletes so that there decision to attend UM is a 40 yr choice not just a 4 yr commitment.

It's things like this that UM apart from these other football farm schools. I hope future canes think long and hard about this. For instance it is unfortunate former Pitt all American WR Larry Fitzgerald had to attend Univ of Phoenix to finish his degree and now claims Phoenix as his school in the commercials he does for them.

You know Larry Fitzgerald gets paid by Phoenix right? Its an endorsement deal.

Do you really think an extended scholarship would have enticed him to finish his degree at Pitt? NFL contract just wouldn't cover the cost of tuition?

Take a break my man.

It is more than just money, UM has a special department that actually reaches out to the former players to encourage them to come back school an finish their degrees here at UM. An of course I know Fitzgerald signed an endorsement deal in 2010 with U of Phoenix.

Stop trying to down play the significance of what UM offes it former athletes, with this weak response, be a proud canes fan an instead save the drama.

LOL @ you deleting my posts. This wouldn't "manipulate the graduation #'s" at all because "Exception: Student-athletes who are five years beyond initial full-time collegiate enrollment and
have exhausted eligibility shall not be included in the APR cohort . . ." and you EXHAUST eligibility once five years have gone by since you enrolled. So guys like Andre Johnson coming back to get their degree 10 years later doesn't count for the NCAA graduation rate. Nice try.

Not downplaying at all. I think its great and in UM's self-interest to do so. But I fail to see its relevance to Larry Fitzgerald and U of Phoenix.

No matter the reasoning, should it be to boost graduation rates or whatever, it's a very decent thing to do.

Graduation rate is calculated based on students graduating within 6 years of entering college, which means they have to come back within a year or two to start working on their classes. If Donna's goal is to manipulate this number, it's probably not very successful.

Take the article for instance, it cited Ray Lewis getting his degree 8 years after leaving Miami and Octavia Blue who came back to school more than 10 years after departing. Although this may not be conclusive evidence, but how many young athletes leaving school early understand the importance of education soon after leaving school? If they did would they have left in the first place?

LOLZ at University of Phoenix. He got paid and probably didn't do much to get that degree, if you can call that a degree.

I don't care if it's good for UM or not, it's a great program/offer to former players and athletes.

I agree with everything but the last note. Terrible try or a mod trolling which is sad.

I don't like Donna and don't give her credit for much except being primarily responsible for the destruction of our football program, but this is a good thing. Should help some recruiting BUT more important is the more former players with degrees, the more coaches, teachers and principals in HS can be Canes. THAT helps with recruiting. However, I think our football players, going back to JJ, have had very good graduation rates. So Donna probably doesn't intend it to help football -- but as I said, I rea,,y don't like her and never had. Still, this is a good thing.
