Miami is expected to hire Minnesota Corey Hetherman as DC

I'm not trying to be negative on this, I'm a glass-half-full kind of guy... Can someone explain to me how this is not Lancy Guidry-esque hire? Both coaches share a similar trajectory: they cut their teeth at lower levels but very limited experience at a power program, enjoyed a few strong seasons at mid-tier programs, are skilled communicators/motivators, had statistically strong defenses before joining Miami, and both seem underwhelming when it comes to recruiting. Figured we'd take a different approach, is what I'm getting at... Just give me some hope.

I would say that the last 5 or 6 years for Hetherman have really skyrocketed him past Guidry's experiences.

Working with Cignetti at JMU. Working with Schiano at Rutgers. And the year at Minnesota. Each of these three experiences probably beats anything on Guidry's pre-Miami resume.

He coached with Schiano at Rutgers for a bit then coordinated a Big 10 defense that was better this year than under the previous coordinator.

Hiring Heatherman from JMU would have been pretty analogous to hiring Guidry from Marshall, but Heatherman cut his teeth as an assistant at Rutgers then had a great year as a coordinator at Minnesota.

For the record, I'm thrilled about the hire & think he's a great DC & defensive mind, which is why he was really one of the only DC's I mentioned/wanted.

But my point overall, is none of that sh*t really matters to this fanbase.

Yall feed on good Coaches & Coordinators like a wild pack of Hyenas. Every. Single. Offseason.

Guidry had no experience in a power conference

FWIW, I'm a Miami grad but otherwise a lifelong Minnesotan and have season tickets to the Gophers, so I'm as in tune with them as I am the Canes. My thoughts on Heatherman:

He generally runs an attacking, aggressive defense, but not a complicated one. He's stated he doesn't want his players thinking too much and to be more instinctua
l (we know how much of a concern that has been under multiple different DC's over the past 10-15 years). Players were rarely out of position - most of the time teams had to out-execute the Gophers if they wanted to have success on offense. The times the defense struggled and got out of position, they occurred mostly in games where they got little help from the offense and the defense wore down as the game went on (Iowa game comes to mind here).

I will say his rep was of him being one of the least effective recruiters on the staff, but I'd rather have a tactician than a recruiter at DC, especially at Miami.

Also, I see all the talk already about trying to bring Koi Perich along. That isn't happening. NIL has been a tertiary concern for him. Being close to home matters (seems like half the town of Esko comes down for the games, all wearing Perich jerseys), but what has mattered the most for him for all accounts is wanting to get to the NFL. Between Antoine Winfield and Tyler Nubin (and even turning a walkon in Jordan Howden into an NFL player), safety is the one position that Minnesota can really talk up more than any other and Koi bought into that heavily.
Keep it simple stupid

Thanks, PJ. Sorry we stole your DC. But $$ talks and can fly the entire family every Friday to Miami and back to Minny by Monday to clock back in for work. No way Koi is bringing in over $1m/yr up there in Esko.

I've lost count but I think this seals our 6th-straight offseason championship.

Hang the banner!
I’ve made this point every year for the last 3-4 years. We’re just built different in the off-season. From mid Jan-late July, no team in the country wants the smoke with Miami. Honestly Aug-Dec always just **** things up for us around here…
