For the past two weeks, Miami coach Al Golden has emphasized how much he has tried to push young players in practice ahead of Saturday’s game against Savannah State.
But Wednesday, Golden said not all the young Hurricanes on his roster will see action this week.
If reserves start pouring in against the struggling Tigers, linebacker Walter Tucker, quarterback Kevin Olsen, cornerback Ray Lewis, or offensive lineman Sunny Odogwu may not play.
Golden said Miami is trying to redshirt those freshmen, along with offensive lineman Hunter Knighton who is out for the season after having shoulder surgery.
One freshman expected to make his debut is 6-foot-5, 304-pound offensive lineman Alex Gall.
If Gall plays, he’ll join Standish Dobard, Stacy Coley, Gus Edwards, Artie Burns, Jermaine Grace, Corn Elder, Alex Figueroa, and Al-Quadin Muhammad among the true freshmen Miami has used.
“I don’t think there will be any surprises, maybe Gall. This will be his first go, but we’ve been spending two weeks getting him ready for this,” Golden said. “We realized we didn’t have enough depth to get through the season after the opener so we’ve really been pushing Alex for the last two and a half weeks. He’ll be ready for his opportunity this week.”
While Miami has seen increased competition at several positions leading up to this week’s game, Golden added there are still positions where Miami needs to continue its work on the recruiting trail, including on the both the offensive and defensive lines and at wideout.
Still, he’s happy that he’s finally able to have the luxury of redshirting recent signees.
“We’re not as deep as we want to be at all our positions, but we can afford to redshirt some guys and I feel like we are building depth,” he said. “But we’ve got to be careful. It can’t be a fool’s gold depth. We’ve got to understand that on the d-line, we’re top heavy. We need help quickly. At wide receiver, we have seven on scholarship and six are healthy right now. That’s a bad number. We need help at wideout.”
