Miami camp makes impression on 2018 star

American Heritage (Plantation) boasts arguably the finest collection of defensive backs in the country. 2017 CB Marco Wilson, along with 2018 prospects Patrick Surtain, Jr. and Tyson Campbell are all high priority targets for the Hurricanes in their respective classes.

Campbell, the 6-2, 180-pound defensive back, describes himself as, “athletic, tall, physical, fast, and a ball hawk, a playmaker”.

Do they Patriots have the absolute best secondary in the country? According to Campbell, it’s a no brainer.

“No doubt. We’re just a bunch of guys who want it. A bunch of ball hawks. We’re athletic and all versatile. We have the confidence that nobody is better than us,” he said.

Campbell says that schools like Oklahoma and UNC have offered which has caught his eye. He added that he has “high interest” from Ohio State, Michigan State, and UCLA.

Last Friday, his American Heritage squad made their way down to Coral Gables for the Mark Richt football camp. The experience turned out to be extremely positive for

Campbell despite the fact his team could not bring home the camp title.

“Coach Banda talked to me after and then Coach Richt told me ‘let’s build a relationship’,” said Campbell. “

“He told me to come down there more often and to bring my family down to take a tour of the school and just get real connected with them.”

As it seems like this Canes staff is doing frequently, they assured Campbell that he is a prospect that they think highly of.

“I feel like they’re really interested in me because they’re putting in the time to show me love and I really appreciate that.”

Campbell’s father also had time to meet Ephraim Banda.

“He was telling me how Coach Banda wanted me and he told my dad that he wants the south Florida DBs to stay home and feel comfortable about playing at UM, the hometown school,” Campbell said.

A factor that could come into play with Campbell is his tight-knit relationship with Canes cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph. Rumph coached Campbell for the last two seasons at American Heritage and was also his optimist coach.

“Coach Rumph is like a second father figure to me. He calls me and gives me advice and mentors me. Since I’ve been in school he’s always told me I can talk to him about anything and UM I still feel that way about him,” Campbell said. “He’s down to earth and real. He sees something in me and I really appreciate it.”

Campbell’s thoughts on Coach Mark Richt?

“He’s going to change that program. What he did at Georgia was just amazing and he told me he wants to get closer to me and build a bond.”

As for his teammate Marco Wilson, Campbell echoed what has been floating around as rumors.

“I feel like Miami and UF are going to be in his top five. I feel like he might stay in the state, but who know.”

Pete where do we stand with him? He names some other schools but not UM. Do we have some ground to make up to Clemson?
 
I like him at safety. He's best going forward. Unbelievable burst.

Trust me when I tell you we're in excellent standing with Tyson. Clemson is where they are on his list because of their recent success, they were his first offer and they have a legit P5 staff. If we didn't have to suffer through our last corch's regime, we probably would have already been in the driver's seat. Richt coming in with the changes that he has is paying dividends already. All while people have been criticizing Rumph, I always said I'd reserve judgment for later and that Campbell is one kid that I know his hire would be a positive toward his recruitment. I'm not Pete of course, but I am a family member, and not just some distant relative he sees every blue moon. The decision is gonna be his solely, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if he named us his leader after a 9+ win season this year. Another more obscure angle that can be worked by the staff is through Kareem Brown, he went to Norland with Tyson's big sister( we were 11th graders when he was born) and I know he knows her pretty well. Too many personal angles that no school can duplicate, the factors already mentioned, plus his whole family loves The U. All we gotta do is win...

D$, I honestly think he's gonna end up a FS or back at WR due to outgrowing the CB position. If you saw his parents and granddad, you'd say the same. Before he hit 6'2", he was the shortest person in his house, mom & big sis included. His pops is 6'4",6'5", and my uncle (his mom's dad) is a 6'6" 80 year old man. Unc once when told me when he was a young man, he was 6'7.5". He could grow three inches over this summer let alone the next two years. As far as his frame, I don't know, he'll definitely have one at least suitable for the secondary but he could get bigger. Keep in mind that unlike many other top prospects in his class, he's a true '18 guy and a young one at that. Kid just turned 16 a couple months ago, compared to a guy like Jobe (no knocking him, just an example) who's already 18. He just started growing a little peach fuzz on his lip so he's gotta alotta maturing to do before senior year. That along with his genetics could even have him at OLB if he stays on D.

I know PropJoe is a huge fan of this kid too. He will be one to keep an eye on as the season progresses. Gotta like those measurables. With that size I suspect his recruitment will blow up any day now.
 
Absolutely no reason we shouldn't land any of the AH kids with Rumph especially the CBs like Wilson, Surtain Jr., and Campbell. That's an amazing secondary on that high team and I'm sure Rumph had a huge hand in developing them. I can only imagine our potential secondary in a few years with Bandy, Jobe, Henderson, Frierson, Wilson, Surtain Jr, Samuel Jr., Blades Jr., and Campbell. Obviously we won't land all of them but **** the talent is amazing.

I expect Tyson Campbell to put on some good weight an become an exceptional Safety at the college level. The young man has a good head on his shoulders.

had same comment. So smart on so many levels. Starting with it's true and substantive. But also sends right message without blowing smoke up a kid's **** or misleading him. And kids sense that, so it wins Richt their respect. And now, instead of having to chase him or pressure him, we've inviting him to investigate us and show his true interest.

This. I'll tell you one thing though, whatever shortcomings Rumph has as a recruiter can be cancelled out by Richt's recruiting expertise and the amount of trust that Campbell already has in him. And you can bet your *** that Rumph's gonna give his best effort towards keeping him here, the kid has been his star player since he was 5,6 years old. One of the kids who helped build the foundation of the foundation of his coaching career. If Tyson isn't the #1 DB priority in '18 for the entire staff, he'll definitely be #1 in Rumph's eyes.

You can see why Richt is such a monster on the recruiting trail. Just some of his comments like "let's build a relationship" and his easy demeanor stand out.

He doesn't come off as a high-pressure shyster. He goes to a recruit's house and takes his shoes off and kicks back on the couch for a couple hours.

The dude must be scaring the motherfck out of Jizzbo and McEltooth and anyone else looking to make their hay recruiting down here.
