Key Notes:
  • Points Scored is highest ever in twenty five year span
  • Total Margin of Victory is fourth best in twenty five year span
  • Average Points Allowed is tied with the 2008 and 2023 squads for eleventh worst in twenty five year span
  • Margin of victory over Duke was the fifth largest since Miami joined the ACC, and was the most points every scored against that school since the Canes joined the ACC
  • At 10-1, the 2024 Canes have scored slightly more points than the 2000 Hurricanes and are averaging two touchdowns more per game than the 2017 squad. The 2000 Canes had an average margin of victory that was 5 points per game greater than 2024

Average Margin of Victory is the big one to me.

Behind only 2000, 2001, and 2002.

Nice.

And to think these margins are happening with a defense that's consistently getting out-played and out-schemed? Imagine what could be...

Offensively we’re better (statistically) than all those years. Don’t forget both 00 and 01 we had something ridiculous like 10+ non offensive TDs each of those two years. If only we had special teams and defense to go with this offense.

Good lord those years between 03 and 17...woof
Yep, you can break it up into various quadrants:

2003-2007: Coker fails to recruit wide receivers and quarterbacks, offense bottoms out leading to a regime change

2008-2011: Shannon regime rebuilds, but defense is never the same. Runs out of time. Golden can’t do much better with the talent he inherits in year 1

2012-2015: Golden’s recruiting blunted by NCAA forever investigation, defensive scheme hamstrings Miami.

2016-2019: Richt takes over and does much better with Golden’s roster, but even though he generally lands much better recruiting classes the actual play on the field is worse. Manny fails to recruit linebackers.

2020-2022: Overall Recruiting picks up on paper but actual on the field results vary. Failure to recruit in key positions (OL, LB, defensive backs) or misses in those positions affect the overall product.

2023 to present: Rebuilding into a semblance of the 1999-2000 teams. WIP, with a team that for the last two years has been very young.

The previous quadrants have all had false dawns, and each regime ultimately ran out of time.

I’ve done a post in the past on how the failure of Coker to recruit wide receivers at a replacement level ultimately had spillover effects that lasted all the way until around 2015.

By sheer numbers, Shannon was able to get the room back up to par in 2008. But he had to sign 7 freshmen wide receivers to do it. Which meant that wide receiver recruiting for the next few cycles was minimal. Which led to Golden having to sign 5 wide receivers in the 2012 class. Which then led to some of the same pressures - why should a 2013 wide receiver sign when there is such a youthful logjam ahead of him.
