Cornerback Brandon McGee was “physical probably for the first time since I’ve been here” during Saturday’s scrimmage and was “mixing it up” in short-yardage situations, Golden said.

The coach has been pleased with the senior’s response to being relegated to third team on the pre-spring depth chart, the result of Golden’s anger toward McGee’s performance in the offseason conditioning program. McGee has moved up to first-team since spring started and now wears a black jersey in practice.

“I see Brandon a little differently than most do. I see a kid very talented, that’ s willing, that’s working hard,” Golden said. “We just have to get him to the point where he has enough confidence to go out and make plays, not freelance, but go out and finish plays.

“He has all the skill set you want and now he’s 190 [pounds]. …I think he feels more confident about his body and the physical nature he can play at 190.”

I predicted a 60% chance that he wont be around come August but if he does turn out to be a stud in his 5th year here, I will man up and admit i was wrong and take my shots. I have no problems being held accountable or eating crow. But i still will wait until i see it for real, when August comes around and he is still here. We have only a finite amount of valuable game experience during the 2012 season. Do we use it to get the fresh crop of incoming kids some much needed experience and plan for the future? Or do we use it on a 5th year senior who has never amounted to a fraction of his potential in his entire stay here?

If he can get the light to click on in Brandons head he can do it with anyone.

Hopefully this is just the beginning

No reason why this kid shouldn't be a major producer. He doesn't need to be an all-american, just hold it down.

Hope all this is true but I really dont have a ton of faith in him. I wont be shocked if he gets beat out when bush, howard get here.

Hope seems to be doing great things along with gunter so mcgee better give it all he has.

With huge lack of experience at CB, I doubt he gets kicked off the team.

Every now and then we get guys that somehow just get it their last year in the program. Most don't become stars their last year, but they finally become reliable which is a huge bonus. We've had plenty, but at DB the guy that comes to mind right away is Marcus Maxey. Dude was just another guy until his last year when he became more consistent and played solid minutes for us.

Yep. Carlos Armor, too. Wasn't as good as MM that last year, but still significantly improved.

Here's hoping McGee makes the jump.

Good comparison. Maxey seemed like he was just gonna be a roster filler but was real solid during his senior year and played his way into the league (albeit for only a season IIRC). Hopefully McGee does the same thing.

Definitely on board with McGee having a Maxey like senior year. IMOp, Maxey played AA caliber football that year, and that kind of CB play would be WELCOMED......

I guess Golden wasn't watching when McGee "tackled" Scott by running in Scott's direction and just happening to hit him enough to knock him down.

/It was an awful play. Tano and I shook our heads in disgust.

McGee has a way to go before hits Maxey territory, but at this point pretty sure he got the message that his *** is on thin ice and needs to show something NOW.
