Blanche Ely’s Terry McCray was one of Miami’s top remaining linebacker prospects on the board and has been rumored to be the next commitment for the past month. The rumors have now been put to rest, as he committed this morning to the Hurricanes.

“It’s been on my mind for a while. I just wanted to make sure it’s okay with family with my decision. While I was there it was just something that made me want get it over with and commit to the school I’ve wanted to commit to.”

McCray was down in Coral Gables today for a visit and spent a lot of time with the staff not only touring the campus, but speaking with each other.

“They were acting like they won an award or something when I committed. I talked to a few of the players and I got to talk to the staff. They were just showing me around and while they were showing me around I was loving every bit of it.”

The 6’2, 220 pound rush-end prospect gave his verbal to Miami and now states he is a strong commitment, but may be looking around in the future.

“It’s a hundred percent right now. In the future I’m not too sure, but right now it’s a hundred percent.”

The Blanche Ely product is now glad to have the process over with and is looking to help his team make a title run.

“Right now, I’m just trying to get my team better and get them all on the same page so we can make a state championship.”

McCray got some inspiration from his cousin who happens to be a former Hurricane, Teraz McCray.

“He just told me to go for it because I can get a lot out of it and that it’s a great school education wise and I can play on a great team as well.”

McCray spoke with Coach Golden today and truly believes Golden can lead this team back to it’s glory days.

“He asked me about my personal life and a little about football and my passion. I think he is a good person, he likes to get down to business and I think he is taking Miami in the right direction. Soon, I think Miami is gonna be that team to beat just like the 2002 team.”

As finals words for the Hurricane fans, he left a short quote.

“Fear the tie! (Laughs)”

lulz, im fine with the quote

/most ppl are "smh" at the pickup anyways...if he changes his mind then it opens up a spot for one of the future "flips"

Ehh not really. Staff wouldn't have taken him now if they didn't think he was worthy of the offer. I think he's saying it in case he has a monster year and more schools come into the picture.

He grabbed a spot before it's too late.

That's fine as long as he knows we still have to send him a LOI on NSD.
 
I think this just was a "Relationship building" commit. Unless he stars big time I think he will just stick to get offers

Maybe he's saying he wants to be here but if grades and qualifying to get into UM become a problem then he will have to reevaluate things. I think "on the bubble recruits" say stuff like this so that when/if they can't qualify for the school that they want to go to they can make it appear that settling for a school with lower academic requirements was a choice that they made and not one that was forced on them.
 
I think Nigel said something like that a few weeks before he committed. Let's hope this kid take a page from Nigel and realizes their is nothing like being a Miami Hurricane. Welcome to THE U young man!!! Listen to you cousin, only a few ever run through the SMOKE. At the White House the other day, Pres Obama mentioned THE SMOKE--remember he is the flipping President of the USA but the only men on the lawn that day who ever ran through where Ray and Ed. Everyone else their were, well just some other guys! It only happens at THE [[_]]!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
From his Article in the Herald it sounds like he has is solid to UM. I wish him a successful career at UM, and I hope he proves me wrong is wanting the staff to take Jaevon Walton over him.

McCray talks Canes commitment, training with Patrick Peterson, evading Ely pipeline to LSU

Blanche Ely linebacker Terry McCray took an unofficial visit to UM Tuesday morning where he met with coaches and became the 24th commitment in the Hurricanes' 2014 recruiting class.

For McCray, a 6-3, 220-pound All-Broward Third Team selection as a junior, picking the Canes over Minnesota and West Virginia was an easy decision.

"I always liked Miami, always liked the school," McCray said. "I really feel like the team they're putting together is going to be one of the best in the country. I didn't want to miss out on the opportunity for that and to play with my favorite college team."

By picking UM, McCray became the 15th commitment from South Florida to pick the Hurricanes and the first from Ely since 2003 when four members of the Tigers' state championship team including his cousin, defensive lineman Teraz McCray, opted to head to Coral Gables.

"Our tradition for awhile there sending guys to LSU -- Patrick Peterson, my cousin Rashard Robinson," said McCray, who has received interest from Florida State and LSU throughout the recruiting process. "I just didn't want to follow everybody else."

McCray, who turns 19 in January, said Hurricanes coaches have wanted him since October because of his ability to rush the quarterback and defend in pass coverage.

"On the internet it says I'm an inside linebacker, but I'm really an outside linebacker," McCray said. "UM wants me to be a part of their 3-4 scheme, rushing in and as a drop back linebacker. At Ely we play 3-4. So I'm basically just rushing and dropping back half the time."

McCray said the reason he's solid in pass coverage is because he actually grew up playing defensive back alongside his cousin Robinson and under the tutelage of Peterson. McCray said he's trained with Peterson every day in the mornings during the summer.

"I've known Patrick for almost 10 years. He used to live right by me," McCray said. "That's why I think I'm a good coverage linebacker. I always did DB stuff. He has a few linebackers he's played with here at Ely and other places that come out there and show me a few things. We just do like speed training, sometimes drills, individual drills."

McCray said he moved to linebacker as a sophomore at Ely and has been learning the position year-to-year while adding weight to his body. He's gained about 10 pounds since the end of last season, but still feels just as quick. He said he's also begun to study film a lot more than he did in the past.

"I feel like I have to watch it. I don't like to go out unprepared," McCray said. "It helps me read the snaps. I watch film so much now I know when they're going to snaps. I just started doing it this year. I want to be the best on the field."

McCray said he's done with his recruiting and the he plans on attending UM. But asked if he might take some trips at the end of the year he said he probably would go on at least one -- to Minnesota, which like UM has been recruiting him a long time.

"I know this is the school I want to be at," McCray said. "I might go just visit some more schools to get out and go somewhere, just to see something new.

"My parents wanted me to be close to home anyway. They love Miami. We all love Miami."
