* DL Tyriq McCord says the key to his play this year has been "just accepting my role. I just come in on third down, rush the passer. And on special teams I accepted my role on that too. I'm not looking at the big picture, am just trying to help out."

McCord says a key to him moving forward is working to add weight.

"Sometimes I get pushed around," McCord said. "I'm not as strong as (my opponent) but I'm faster right now at this level. So if I have the speed and strength I'll be a force to be reckoned with."

He definitely needed the 'shirt, but he's doing OK, and actually playing better as the year goes on.

Can someone explain to me the whole "kid coulda used the redshirt" argument? Honest question. Do they get to lift more weights if they redshirt? I mean, besides that, I don't see the benefit over getting playing time.

Some would rather not use eligibility until a player is fit physically for their position.

Redshirt year allows guys more time to adjust to the college game mentally and physically instead of being thrown to the wolves and sucking. It also saves a year of eligibility.

Is this a real question? You give them another year to physically develop...the difference between an 18 year old and a 19 year old is pretty significant, but where it really helps is that after a couple years you have a bunch of 22-23 year old men playing on your team. Typically players will gain anywhere from 10-20 pounds their redshirt year, and that makes a huge difference.

under normal circumstances he redshirts.

It's a shame that we couldn't have given him the year to bulk up, but he has the right attitude about things and the PT should pay dividends next year.

Yeah, I think McCord would have put on 15 minimum, maybe 20, with the proper nutrition and S&C. No time to do bulk up during season.

How so? Would he be in the weight room on Saturdays while everyone else was playing? Its not like redshirt guys don't practice and its not like he's playing 60 snaps a game
