"Louisiana Tech will replace Marshall as the opponent for Army in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, it was announced Saturday.

The announcement comes after Marshall officials notified bowl officials that the Thundering Herd wouldn't be able to participate after a wave of players recently entered the transfer portal in the wake of a coaching change.

As of Saturday morning, Marshall has 36 players in the transfer portal, including 29 scholarship players and 17 players on the team's two-deep setup for the Sun Belt title game. All three Thundering Herd quarterbacks who played this season are in the portal, including starter Braylon Braxton, the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year."

Hopefully not a harbinger of the future of college football.

Unverified quote from Mike Norvell "Why didn't I think of that last year?"

Unfortunately, this won't be the last time it happens. The Transfer portal is a big problem, worse problem is the screwed-up timeline of multiple signing windows, portal windows, hiring and firing of coaches plus nonsensical postseason. Actually, I'm surprised it has not happened before.

That’s rough, sad to see really. Do they look at maybe pushing the date back to enter the portal, be interesting going forward.
Pushing back the portal wouldn't solve this completely. Players would still sit out the game because they are going to enter the portal. I don't think we'll ever go back to bowl games meaning something. All the more reason to appreciate guys like Cam and Martinez and support this team in the pop tarts bowl.

It’s all over their Coach not having his contract renewed & crying foul. He was offered 4 different extensions but refused them all. This isn’t your normal portal situation.
Agreed, but all 3 QBs on the team jump to the portal? The guy must be a helluva coach.

College ball has always been the minor leagues for the NFL. Usually not much movement between schools though. Now it appears to be splitting into AA ball and AAA ball. Players starting in AA ball, hoping for their call up to AAA level before moving up to the big show.

It’s time to let the bowl games die with the rest of the traditions of college football. Sad but true
It might be, but I think there's too much $$$ to leave on the table right now, even for lesser bowls. The larger they make the number of participants in the playoff, the more bowls will fall off.

I read it as the coach manipulating the kids to be anti-admin bc he didn’t land the contract he wanted. Not sure. Well written article but could’ve been biased.

Not sure where you got that from the article. It seems lately when coaches move to other schools, there are usually a lot of kids that jump into the portal to follow him to his next job (i.e. the Indiana coach had 13 players from JMU follow him last offseason). Usually it's for a step up in competition, but going from Marshall to Southern Miss seems to be a lateral move to me, but I could be wrong.

I'm new to the whole Marshall stuff, I didn't know until last night that Charles Huff left and took the Southern Miss job. That's crazy to me but the story is his family really didn't like to live in Huntington but I'm guessing he would have wanted a better job then Southern Miss

Marshall has high expectations for football despite it being a small school in a small state with little local prep talent and I think he was feeling some pressure from their delusional supporters. Look at what the school did to Huff's predecessor Doc Holliday, who was doing a pretty good job. He didn't want to stick around for similar outcome. At least with Southern Miss he will near to more football talent from prep and JUCOs.
