Mario Cristobal talks team after first spring practice

Mario Cristobal met with reporters on Saturday to break down the beginning of spring practice.

"Accountability, running around from point A to point B, finishing plays, certainly energy, and overall an attempt to improve culture was evident," said Cristobal.

The team hired several new coaches, and Cristobal noted that they all come from renowned institutions.

"I think whenever you make moves or you have moves on the coaching staff, it's always an opportunity to upgrade," said Cristobal.

Cristobal said that although making these kinds of changes can be challenging, he said he always sees them as a chance to advance. Cristobal commended new defensive coordinator Lance Guidry for his tenacity and enthusiasm on defense as well as Shannon Dawson for his capacity to design explosive offenses both in the air and on the ground.

Tim Harris Jr., Kevin Beard, Jason Taylor, and Coach Nicholson are more recent additions to the coaching staff. Each coach was praised by Cristobal, who also emphasized each one's commitment to teamwork.

"I think they have brought a lot to the table, and I think they are going to help us in a big way," said Cristobal.

While he acknowledged that certain players were having trouble adjusting to the new systems, overall, he expressed his satisfaction with the day's execution. He mentioned that, despite the difficulty of coming mid-season, the senior players had done a tremendous job of integrating and instructing the new players.

"There's a lot to build on, lots of good film to watch," Cristobal said.

This was my concern & gripe w/ the length of time it took to get staff in place. I would’ve thought Mario had learned his lesson from last season, as he waited a month b4 Spring practice to hire an OC & we saw the struggles adjusting to a new scheme, while unlearning one these guys were in for two yrs. This time, he waited even longer to hire an OC, & once again, these young men have to unlearn a previous concept, while adjusting to new language in a matter of weeks.

That’s tough to do, & I fully expected this, to be honest. Just hopefully it’ll be ironed out b4 the season starts, but if we hear come Summer that we’re just not where we need to be at, but we’re “coming along & improving”, I’m going to be on full guard & caution.

I mean, I hear you, but maybe "certain players were having trouble adjusting to the new systems" because its day 1 of spring practice. There isn't a ton you can do with them before now, anyway.

True, but having playbooks and a general understanding of terminology could go a long way.

This offense will need reps. Hopefully the leaders on that unit keep kids together and practicing on their own time this summer leading up to fall camp. It's the only way they'll have some familiarity and rhythm after so much turnover and change.

if were hearing excuses about not enough time to learn the O this coming year, ill riot. I get it last year bc he was hired in December post conference title game, recruited, and had to hire a staff. this time the changes were known before the season ended. the head start was there.

What happens when you riot? What does that look like?

True and agreed. But you know what else will help our players a ton? Keeping it simple.

We don’t need to mimic the 49ers playbook and try to over-orchestrate a complex offense.

Keep things simple: Establish good blocking upfront then encourage TVD to play fast and confident in getting the ball to his weapons.
