The Canes had their first scrimmage of camp on Saturday. Coach Cristobal met with Joe Rose on WQAM to recap the scrimmage and more:

On the scrimmage: The defense had been getting after the offense pretty good all of camp. And Saturday, it just looked like a determined group to set the tone early. After really two big plays, the offense got rolling. The defense came back and made some really good plays as well. But overall, the day belonged to the offense. It was good to see that...

"I'd like to be scoring 50 points a game, in whatever way we can get that done." That doesn't sound like caveman ball........................

He hired Gatass, realized immediately it was a mistake, and got rid of him.

He hired Dawson, an air raid guy at his core, and brought him back for Year 2. You don't bring a guy like that back if you're trying to figure out who can run caveman ball for you. WTF even is Caveman Ball, by the way? UGA got 27 rushing TDs out of their top 2 backs...is that a bad thing? Forget it, that's another thread.

For this one, yeah his comments sound great. You can CLEARLY tell he knows what he's got on his hands. Just stay healthy, for the love of Christ.

"You've got to be able to throw to win. Everybody wants to be 50-50. I'd like to be scoring 50 points a game, in whatever way we can get that done. Coach Dawson has done an unbelievable job, along with the rest of the staff, formulating a plan that really highlights and makes sure that we get the ball in the hands of the guys that can make plays happen, to make us more explosive."

Mario said this?!

STEVEN... WHAT IN THE **** @P-Tizzle

Is it possible that Mario sounds more enthusiastic because he finally has a team that deserves enthusiasm? Maybe he saw all of TVD’s limitations when he played against a zone defense in practice? Maybe he saw the lack of depth and realized a few injuries could derail the season.

Maybe, just maybe, it has taken Mario 3 full seasons to shape and build a team as he wants it, and he finally has it. And maybe he knows with 1-2 more recruiting classes, UM will have depth of talent not seen since the early 2000’s.

Possibly, but I think some of that is we are reading his comments with more enthusiasm because on paper we look way better than 3 years ago. I do forget the exact quote but when Mario got here wasnt he calling TVD an NFL guy and one of the best QBs in the nation? It was pretty high praise. I think us as fans were skeptical like come on man, we seen this guy, its like whenever the new CB coach would tell us Ivey was lights out in practice. Aside from the obvious such as injuries, I do think we will see a different brand of ball this year. I do have a slight concern because it seems like Meesh and Cam are the 2 leaders and they just got here a few months ago, same with Martinez and Brown, we have a lot of guys we are counting on as being play makers and they have never played together with live bullets. It really helps bringing the coordinators back for consistency but it doesnt matter as much when you have first year players.

I think he did praise TVD, but I don’t recall it being like he is praising Cam.
Mario has upgraded every single position on the team significantly from when he arrived, so I just think enthusiasm is natural in any field when a person sees their hard work coming together to create the product they were expecting.

I”m not drinking the Kool Aid and immediately putting us in the top 5 because that requires good coaching as well. Butch Davis was not a good game day coach, but he recruited incredibly, and he had a very good staff littered for future college and NFL head coaches. So, IMO, we still need to see if we have the coaching piece to match the player talent piece. If so, the rest of college football is in trouble.

I get what you are saying but part of a coaches job is marketer and psychologist. He wasn't going to come here and start bagging on the only QB on the roster who truly had an opportunity to be the starter no matter what he truly thought.

Caveman ball is going into a slow down, run out the clock mode, with a 10 pt lead instead of stepping on their throats.

There’s a sense of urgency as well

He had a lot of goodwill when he got here, and he got his resources and support

But the coaches know it’s time to deliver and we signed some players that are trying to audition for the NFL
