As an excercise in curiosity, I laid out my expected depth chart for this upcoming season, including my expected 2013 class (and considered who would RS.) Then I color coded each player by class. The results were amazing!

For this upcoming season (2013) I expect we will start 7 seniors, with 11 in my 2 deep. [Note: I did not include any incoming recruits in my 2 deep.]
Then I looked at the backups for both groups to see who was available in the pipeline to replace those 2013 seniors after they graduated. To my amazement, I only found only two (2) spots (4 at the most) where we might have a problem. Yep, only two (2). They are the ‘Big Uglies’ on DL, of course. Maybe only four, and no more!

To start the argument off, I’ll explain.

First, I did not consider Morris to be ‘difficult’ to replace --- not because of his skill-set, but because I expect to see Olsen in the wings, ready to go as a RS Frosh in 2014, with Williams still around, as well. Next, no need to worry ‘bout replacing Hurns with a whole brigade of wideouts behind him.

Although Lindner and Henderson will be stallwarts in 2013, the kids Al brought in last year, along with this year’s crop, makes me think the OL will be in good shape in 2014. In fact, it might be better than the 2013 OL, even without Lindner & Sentral.

On the defensive side, Rodgers is going to be the only senior DB in the 2 deep, and he may not even make the 2 deep in 2013 ( I expect Burns & Carter to RS, but I may be wrong.) Other than the DL, that leaves Jimmy Gaines as the only senior ‘backer in 2013’s LB corps. Terry, M. Thomas, Figueroa and Grace should be adequate (or better) replacements.

That leaves the DL as the only weak spot for 2014. Just as it will probably be in 2013, the DL will again be the Achellies heal of that squad, but although Porter, Green and Robinson will leave, I believe that Al has (to some extent) addressed that with this incoming class.

I think McCord is gonna be a star in 2 years and will be able to adequately replace Green. That leaves Porter and Robinson as two guys who may be difficult to replace. K. Bryant may argue that, with a year outta HS, he can do the job. But we don’t even know if he’ll have a ‘U’ on his helmet.

Until 2013 starts to unfold, and we see (1) who Al can land in this year’s DT class, or who steps up from last year’s RS frosh, this shall remain the only serious question mark. Yes, I know Khairi Clark and Anthony Moten might be available, along with whoever else Al uncovers. But I am still optomistic that our group of DTs as a whole, will still be an improvement in 2014.

What’s the bottom line? It appears that 2013 will be a very good year. Probable ACC Championship and BCS Bowl, but things look even rosier for 2014.

I’m excited about Hurricane Football in the future. And it is obvious that this ship has the right Captain and CEO.

IT’S A PROCESS AND IT’S WORKING!

The team will be STACKED in 2014... that is for certain. All we need is SOLID QB play. Two things:

1. I honestly feel that Williams needs to be the one to throw the rock, unless (a big IF) Olsen is a legend in the making, he starts... That leads to more uncertainty though and more fingers crossed/hoping/praying.

2. Why can't we have a young superstar QB though? If Olsen is that guy, He will definitely have a lot of weapons around him. Regardless, one of these two needs to play excellent football and we win in 2014!

I'd be surprised if Green logged starter minutes next year. McCord should add 20 pounds and be a beast. Plus with Bond coming and maybe some others, Green may get crowded out if he does not improve his game. Guys do sometimes make big jumps in their last year. Frankly I'd expect all these kids to improve with another year in the system. ****, if Gaines makes the jump he made over the past 365 he will be an all ACC type LB.

Could you post that?

Anyway, I don't see why people are glossing over Williams, Dewey and Crow, and anointing a red-shirt freshman. I know Olsen is very talented, but I HOPE, after witnessing the development of JHarris and SMorris, that after 3 years in the system, these guys will have a lot to say about that.

I don't think ABurns or JCarter will redshirt. Extremely talented and play with a ferocity that AHighsmith and KRogers do not bring. By 2014, they will be sophmores and in heavy rotation. I think KRogers will be gone by then.

TMCcord will start this spring and the rest of the year. After UTough, his reps and production will rise. By 2014, he should be the ALL-ACC conversation.

Agree with everything else

Williams isnt taking us to a BCS game. If one of the young pups can't start in 14, we won't go very far. Williams stinks.

I was gonna wait until after NSD to post it. I'll at least wait until after next weekend's All Star games. If we could PM on this site I'd do it.

Fisch will have to alter the offense if Williams is the guy at QB. Instead of being pass heavy, it'll have to be a run oriented offense utilizing PA. Williams isnt mobile and doesnt have a great arm. Im hoping Fisch can do something with him though.

Keep seeing people talk about how good McCord is going to be. Maybe I'm the only one, but I don't see it at all. I see no technique/moves, no aggression, doesn't seem to have much power for his size, doesn't seem to have much speed and quickness for his size. His go-to move is to go up the field 4 steps at 2/3 speed and stop. He needs major U Tough / PED improvement and development by the staff. Unfortunately, defensive line development seems to be one of the weakest coaching areas on the staff. IMO, I don't think he's ever going to play much.

Yea, I'm not crowning Williams at all, I just think we have better odds with a Senior QB that has been in the system for 3+ years to put it together and lead. Gotta believe that he will improve in the same way Jacory and Morris both made strides with this coaching staff.

I really don't care who it is, we just need great QB play to make the run!

Thanks for posting but that's just too far in the future IMO. So much happens between now and then. I'm not even going to predict or set expectation for 2013 until after spring ball. We have a dynamic offense but we are one injury away from not having that.

Seriously? I thought McCord was our best situational pass rusher this year. Plus he slammed Logan Thomas. Can't hate on the dude.

People unfortunately expect 18 year old defensive linemen to be extremely polished. Not the way it works. 2 years from now, he'll be one of the dominant edge rushers in College Football.

McCord virtually never beat his man one-on-one. To me, Gabe Terry has a much larger upside than McCord. He is explosive, great strength for his size, good speed and quickness and is extremely aggressive and competitive. Golden said a couple of times that Terry was disruptive in practice (never heard that about McCord). As a situational pass rusher, McCord will probably find himself behind Bond, Terry, and Figueroa next year.

Wow, I just don't see that at all. Hope you're right though.

You have those same thoughts if he adds 12-15 pounds by next season? McCord has a great frame for an edge rusher and he has plenty of speed and a nose for the football. Can't see him being "behind" any of those guys yet. All that you mentioned will get reps though IMO.

Has to be a troll.
