As an excercise in curiosity, I laid out my expected depth chart for this upcoming season, including my expected 2013 class (and considered who would RS.) Then I color coded each player by class. The results were amazing!
For this upcoming season (2013) I expect we will start 7 seniors, with 11 in my 2 deep. [Note: I did not include any incoming recruits in my 2 deep.]
Then I looked at the backups for both groups to see who was available in the pipeline to replace those 2013 seniors after they graduated. To my amazement, I only found only two (2) spots (4 at the most) where we might have a problem. Yep, only two (2). They are the ‘Big Uglies’ on DL, of course. Maybe only four, and no more!
To start the argument off, I’ll explain.
First, I did not consider Morris to be ‘difficult’ to replace --- not because of his skill-set, but because I expect to see Olsen in the wings, ready to go as a RS Frosh in 2014, with Williams still around, as well. Next, no need to worry ‘bout replacing Hurns with a whole brigade of wideouts behind him.
Although Lindner and Henderson will be stallwarts in 2013, the kids Al brought in last year, along with this year’s crop, makes me think the OL will be in good shape in 2014. In fact, it might be better than the 2013 OL, even without Lindner & Sentral.
On the defensive side, Rodgers is going to be the only senior DB in the 2 deep, and he may not even make the 2 deep in 2013 ( I expect Burns & Carter to RS, but I may be wrong.) Other than the DL, that leaves Jimmy Gaines as the only senior ‘backer in 2013’s LB corps. Terry, M. Thomas, Figueroa and Grace should be adequate (or better) replacements.
That leaves the DL as the only weak spot for 2014. Just as it will probably be in 2013, the DL will again be the Achellies heal of that squad, but although Porter, Green and Robinson will leave, I believe that Al has (to some extent) addressed that with this incoming class.
I think McCord is gonna be a star in 2 years and will be able to adequately replace Green. That leaves Porter and Robinson as two guys who may be difficult to replace. K. Bryant may argue that, with a year outta HS, he can do the job. But we don’t even know if he’ll have a ‘U’ on his helmet.
Until 2013 starts to unfold, and we see (1) who Al can land in this year’s DT class, or who steps up from last year’s RS frosh, this shall remain the only serious question mark. Yes, I know Khairi Clark and Anthony Moten might be available, along with whoever else Al uncovers. But I am still optomistic that our group of DTs as a whole, will still be an improvement in 2014.
What’s the bottom line? It appears that 2013 will be a very good year. Probable ACC Championship and BCS Bowl, but things look even rosier for 2014.
I’m excited about Hurricane Football in the future. And it is obvious that this ship has the right Captain and CEO.
IT’S A PROCESS AND IT’S WORKING!
