Linebackers look to be biggest need

We've got to start grooming kids as the big 3 could all go as Juniors. Other than the Oline I would think every other area is solid.

Wtf? Our lb unit is the deepest unit on the team. We're ELEVEN deep there with no seniors. Our starting linebackers are sophomores ffs.

Why people are having conniptions about linebacker is something I will never understand. With all the spread crap offenses run, only 2 lbs really get starter minutes, with the third sharing time with the nicklebacks.

After the '18 season we lose the following players:

Owens
McCray
Smith
*Shaq (potential to go pro)
* Pinckney (potential to go pro)

Gordinier has had back-to-back season where tore an ACL. I wouldn't count on him going forward. Steed is a RS player this year. Jennings and Wilder have played sparingly most on ST and garbage time. McCloud's the only guy I see coming back as he's finally starting to get back to his old self. But we need two LBs in this upcoming class.

Adrian, it’s the knowns and the unknowns that make fans nervous. The knowns are that Owens, Smith and at least one, probably two, of our starters are gone after next year, along with McCray. Gordinier has never been able to contribute due to injury and Perry was improving but slowly before injury. The unknowns are the ability of those two plus three freshmen, one recovering from injury himself, to fill the shoes of those leaving, with no drop off in performance. I think it’s fair to say most fans don’t see the same potential for greatness in the current depth chart as the guys on the field this year who are gone after next. Meanwhile we see a kid like Bonitto who would make a great fit for our team waiting for a hard push by the coaches while a kid like Joyner plays footsies.

We use to get our speed on D by moving kids forward. Safety to LB, LB to DE. DTs are different matter. There we need large with quick feet to collapse the center of pocket and also stop inside run plays. Not cows like Golden wanted, more the dancing bear type. Do any DBs we are recruiting look like they could move forward and be the classic fast smaller Cane LB?

They are on the roster already

Harris? Harris is a Sr. It’s like u don’t even know the team or players which makes you less credible.

Like I been saying our backup linebackers don't even fit our scheme or style. Like our DL recruit, we need hybrid speedy LBs that can play physical like a Ryan Shazier (Just look at Ryan at Ohio State - you'd think he was a DB). Speed is what makes Manny Defense goes and all of our recent LB recruit are either slow or stiff. This is why 4-2-5 works so well because there is more speed on the field. We put to much stress responsibility on our LBs so we can't have slow, stiff LBs out there.

This makes absolutely no sense. Are Shaq and Pinckney these very fast LBs you speak of? No they’re not and our defense has been elite with them. Get the LBs who are good athletes with elite instincts. Instincts is what they need to have. Also I’m not giving up on freshman like Wilder, Jennings, and even Steed. People forget about Steed but he was a **** good player before that injury.

THIS! Don't sleep on this kid man. He had Sean Spence type potential before the injury.

Steed, Jennings Wilder we get one starter for sure. We get another this year.

One of the 3 at least stays 4 years but probably 2.

Derrick Smith moves to LB and will be one of the best there.

We will be fine.

Lighten up and have some faith. We are back on top stop scting like we are still rudderless at the top.

With the DB class we appear to be bringing in, my next thought was which DB do we move to LB. I agree that Derrick Smith seems to be a likely candidate.

Smith looks the way a traditional Canes safety is supposed to look, not big enough to slide down to linebacker. Watch the way they are using Carter. he might still be listed as a safety, but they are using him all over the place. That's the future of this defense.

Agreed. I'm much more concerned about what we're doing at DT and DE.

Also, I've always thought one of Finley, Carter, or Smith ends up being a LB. Carter and Smith are only FR -- they have big frames and will likely add weight the next 1-2 years (a la Grace).

LB way down on the list this year IMO

Before attrition (for example RB could join the top group, depending on who comes back, if Burns ever is worth a ****, DJ's position, etc)

Dire: DT/Te/CB/K
Definite: DE/S/RB/WR
ADD, but not pressing: LB/OL/QB
Only if stud: nothing this year, need a big class
Pass: P

If we are going to move a safety down I would think it would be Finley. He appears to be the only S with enough size and the frame to add weight with taking away his athletic ability(slowing him down). D Smith looks like a safety. I think he's plenty fast and has the length the staff is looking for. He'll play faster with reps. He appears to have earned the confidence of Diaz/Rumph/Banda also.

Go Canes!

Smith is gonna be a helluva safety here. U dumb motha ****as wanna do this every year. Just because he has a big frame does not mean he should be moved to LB. Y'all fools would of moved Sean Taylor to DE by now. Let the kids develop
