Ok everyone knows this defense has got to start with a pass rush. I tried convincing myself that the reason we had absolutely no pressure on rettig or however you spell his name was Utough numbers were bull****. But then that oline starting weakening and it got a lil better and our line was tough thru the 4th. That said, are we working on footwork and using our hands and whatnot to put moves on the o-lines? We need to be teaching that if we arent. We cant just bull rush o-lines and get to qbs with what we have. Just curious... any thoughts?

Here's my opinion on that. In the early 2000's a lot of our D-line pressure came off of stunts. Greg Mark was masterful at teaching our kids how to stunt correctly to keep the offensive linemen off balance and open up creases for the D-line to run through to get to the quarterback.

I did not see any stunting vs BC. I saw D-line staying in their gaps, keeping the pocket integrity. This makes it easy for offensive linemen to passblock. At that point it becomes a one on one battle and very difficult for the defensive linemen to get to the quarterback fast enough to disrupt a play. I will say however that our D-line seem to lack moves -ie- spins, rips, punches, swims. Just a lot of bullrushes.

I believe in stunting, especially in pass plays. Stunts can make you more vunerable to some runs, but it is 3rd and 9, I'll take my chances if it allows us to get more pressure. I am also not sold on our D-line coach teaching our guys the right techniques to beat their man one vs one. Off all of Randy's staff I wished that we had kept Petri. He was a masterful technitian. But he was not a very good recruiter so I guess Golden opted for someone else.

Simple. We don't have any true studs. Every great D has one if not two-three DL that can take over a game. I hope Chick doesn't fall into a sophmore slump. If that happens we are screwed.

Yup. You want your lines to be led by upper classmen, talented ones at that. We have neither on defense.

Hopefully Chick did not put on too much weight and lose speed.

The Chick, Terry, Cain, Green 3rd down package in obvious passing situations does not work, cringe every time that they use that scheme.

Thought Luther played well stripping the ball, would like to see him play a bit more.

Re-watch the game, we did stunt more then a few times.

Sophomore slump is a myth. It may seem like a "slump" when in fact the player has just put a target on his back thanks to their freshman (or rookie) season.
I saw Chick beat his man with ease in the 1st quarter only to look up and see a RB stick him in the chest. He better get used to it until we get a speed rusher on the other side or 2 stud DTs.
