Im sure you try to keep the former players happy by taking them in as an appreciation for service in years gone by. How many of these legacies have really had an impact vs the ones that have been complete Jags and only got on the team due to them having the right daddy?

What is the risk factor in taking these players and hoping they can bring it like dad?

See irvin's son... seems legit as of now. but i realy cant think of a legacy that has stood out.

No offense to Zo but his son doesn't deserve to see the field. he claimed when he was our back up QB his poor play was because he was only a defensive secondary player..... well that isn't showing true either. every time i see a play run to his side of the field i cringe and start thinking why is he even on the field.

sorry my finger were going quicker then my brain. Irvin's son

I agree with the idea that players should be signed on the own merits, not who their father happens to be. I'm not happy about wasting even one scholarship on someone who hasn't earned it on their own.

If there wasn't such a strict scholarship limit I would be for legacy players. But we do have limits and we got NO room for anyone but ballers.

Besides Chickillo, Damien Berry, Kenny's son, did well for us--and, regrettably, didn't get even more of a chance to do so. Hopefully, that's a positive sign as to those bloodlines now that his younger brother is on the team. A lot of people viewed Sinorice Moss as getting legacy treatment, but he earned his keep with us.

That said, I agree that each kid should earn his place on his own merits. I can see affording a legacy a preferred walk-on spot but, absent some relatively rare circumstance (benefit of the doubt in a close call situation, etc.), scholarships should be 100% on merit.

I don't think AJ got a legacy-based favor. The kid played QB in high school, but most were projecting him as a safety and it just hasn't worked out as well as anyone hoped. But, I don't think he was viewed as a guy that never should have been here when he first came aboard. As I recall, most just thought he should have been at safety right away and not wasted time and development opportunities stuck at QB.

You can't take them solely on their name. That said, if they have any reasonable level of talent you take them. Why? Because it is an incentive for past great players to come back to support the U with both money and their presence and gives current players access to some of their favorite NFL players as well as the hope that should they have a son who is decent at football there could be a place for him in the family. I believe the presence of and access to those past U and NFL players can't help but but be a boost to recruiting. Obviously if the kid can't play D-1 ball, you direct him elsewhere. Win- win IMO.

I'm sure it's on a case to case basis... If they have some potential even if it's maybe a special teams star why not?

Not everyone is gonna be a 1st round pick on the team some have to be long snappers etc..

Burgess at Louisville. It's no automatic. Ray Lewis may have got some favors but that's about it.

Lewis?? Highsmith is looking like a reach beyond reason radio special

I am saying Highsmith didn't get a look and a schollie predominantly due to his father. Of course he ended up being a huge liability, but I believe Randy and co really thought he could be a contributor.

we should have gotten Hardgrave from UF kid is the real deal....

We ****ed away a scholly on Ray3....IMO...Ray has millions should have paid his way freeiing up much needed Schollys.....we need guys like Vince and jerome Brown, Sapp type guys

Speed and size is to be had in South FL...

Last time I checked we didn't need to free up any scholly's.
We are playing this year minus 10 scholarships.
That to me is playing at 88% strength.
Maybe we self imposed some reductions, or maybe the 3 year NCAA cloud has been much more pervasive than we outsiders could possibly imagine.
Ray Lewis' kid is an athlete. Athletically he's much more impressive than Highsmith.
I guess we are going to have to hear this, "his daddy should of paid for him" gripe for the next 3 years, as he is on an old school track of not getting meaningful reps until his junior year.

HILARIOUS

Al Golden mostly recruits what you all call "JAGS" on this site.... what does it matter if it's a legacy player or a regular JAG?

I don't see too many "JAGs" in this years class, though.

My favorite baller was Jeremy Brown. He, like Cecil Collins, took the term baller to its literal extreme.
