St. Thomas 2019 LB Anthony Solomon is coming off a huge past two weeks. He started by winning the LB MVP at the Rivals 3 Stripe Miami Camp last week and followed that up with a great performance at the Opening Miami Regional yesterday.
“I feel like I did pretty good. I did what I had to do. I believe the coaches here critiqued me good, so I’ll be working on that at home to get better.”
Individually, the 6’1” 200 pound junior had a big season on the field, but is looking for more team success in his senior year.
“I had 77 tackles, a couple pass break-ups, and forced fumble for a touchdown,” said Solomon. “We didn’t get to where we wanted to, though. The tradition at St. Thomas is that we’re supposed to go to states… you can’t spell “states” without “STA” (St. Thomas Aquinas). We didn’t make it there last year, but I know for a fact I won’t let it happen again this year.”
Recruiting has begun to ramp up for Solomon now that the 2018 class has wrapped up and he talked about what that’s been like lately.
“The most (I hear from) so far is UM, Michigan, South Carolina, Ohio State… and Oregon too, I’ll be trying to go to Oregon soon.”
While he’s hearing from the entire staff at Miami on a regular basis, Solomon points to defensive coordinator Manny Diaz as the coach he has the best relationship with. Because of that, the Canes are in his top 2.
“Right now it’s between Miami and Michigan fighting it out. They’re my clear top 2,” Solomon said. “Ohio State’s probably going to come into the mix real soon, because I’m planning on taking a visit up there sometime in the spring.”
Solomon’s mother is actually a UM grad: she attended Miami from 1987 to 1992 and studied public relations. Solomon himself is coming off an unofficial visit to Miami this past weekend. How’d that go?
“It was actually really nice, I spent the day with coaches and teammates,” Solomon said on the visit. “It was really just to see the campus, get comfortable with each other. We watched some basketball (Miami vs. Syracuse), they showed me all the academic buildings, met some of the current players. I’m already friends with (Mike) Harley, (Michael) Irvin, (Al) Blades, when he gets there.”
While he’s enjoying the recruiting process, Solomon wants to be able to pick his school of choice by the beginning of his senior year to focus on the football season. And yes, academics will play a role in that decision.
“For me, a big factor for school is how good the educational program is. Every school is going to tell you they have the best academic programs, but you have to see it on paper for yourself.”
