Golden says his main worry after the scrimmage was LB depth, anyone know why Kirby, Eddie Johnson, or even armbrister who was playing first team last i checked didnt record a tackle. Golden cited injuries to LBers but i thought the only guy out was supposed to be Gionni Paul.

Armbrister is garbage, Cornelius is garbage, Gaines is probably garbage, Ramon Buchannon is good not great, Paul is hurt, and the rest are too young and inexperienced at this point to make a determination about.

We basically have Perryman this year plus a bunch of question marks.

I like gaines but your right about armbrister and cornelius...werent they both safeties in high school? You cant expect them to just pick up the position that quick

actually cornelius has been tearing it up in practice, and had a sack and an interception in the scrimmage today. Armbrister has been praised by the coaches up to this point in the fall sessions. But believe what you want.

Hey good time as any for my first post. I think the non materialization of what potentially was a great linebacker class is creating this void. Remember at one point Keith Brown, Reggie Northrup were two other **** guys in the mix. Coupled with the fact Josh Witt's concussion maladies and now you're looking at a head coaches concern.

now granted, incoming freshmen shouldn't be the ideal solution for position disparity if a program is playing its numbers right, but when you look at the situation with our current corners how can you not agree that it certainly helps.

Howard, bush davis, Gunther, Crawford are in the mix for early, meaningful playing time. It's depth has caused McGee and finnie to "bring it" if you will. and ultimately I feel strongly that this unit will preform light years ahead of what it did last year.

So in closing, I love last years class and would have to agree with Lemmings assessment that Al Golden is one of the best recruiters in the country. I just wish we could have locked up the LB position and kept them in the fold. (I know I know, can't get them all)

Umm, yeah how can you say that about Armbrister? That is a big kid who is recognizing that he was too big for safety and moved to LB. I have read good things about him and his work ethic. He will be a solid special teamer and hopefully provide depth. I also think that Jimmy gaines has gotten a raw deal to this point, that kid came at 17yrs old! He is just the age of a soph and playing a new position and is garbage? I believe Cornelius came in as a LB but got moved to safety for depth purposes, staff realized he would not be fast enough and moved him back and had him add weight. Our Starters will be Buc, DP, and Gaines with Paul, Kirby and Eddie Johnson and possibly Blue providing depth. The only Frosh of that group is Kirby and Blue and I would be willing to bet the at least LOOK like college players. Barring injury this will be the strong point of the defense. If we can avoid major injuries on the DL we will have a pretty solid defense that will not give up a ton of points this yr.

If this is the case, I think maybe it's just these guys trying to get use to the speed of a college game. I expect Kirby and Eddie Johnson to make a lot of noise and bring quality depth behind the starters this year. The good thing about it is we have two more scrimmages for the young guys to really get there feet wet so it will really start to get interesting when that time comes.

So do I... but Cornelius is a Shannon recruit, and Armbrister was brought in at the 11th hour after signing day 2010.... Golden's first year when he had been on the job a whole month. Neither one were recruited to play linebacker.

That doesn't mean I don't like them, but I have doubts about their ability to make a difference at that position. I know Cornelius had a good spring game anyway, so hopefully he can make up for his lack of size by playing lights out.

Too slow to play safety, too small to play linebacker. Not Miami material.

That's a start.

We'll see if UTough can turn any of them into serviceable players. I think if they're getting coached up properly, they won't be wasted roster spots. I've got more faith in the current staff to develop compared to the previous regime.

Personally I would leave Armbrister and Cornelius at strong safety and bring one of them in on running downs. But the staff knows a **** of a lot more than I do.

Wow.... that is a little extreme don't you think???

IMO,

Jimmy Gaines will be a very good LB for us. He already has football smarts, and all he needed was some more UTOUGH workouts to get right physically. He is 6'3" 230lbs.... that is impressive.

We don't need every player to be an All Star at the position. If these guys can step and be solid LBs.... add that with DP being the "man" than that's all we need.

Those great gator defenses during the tebow days never had outstanding outside linebackers, just solid.

Perryman and Kirby can both be special IMO. Buchanon was coming around when he got injured. As long as he is ok physically I expect him to be better than average. Behind that it's like someone said, we just need them to be solid.

It's definitely not fair to say Ambrister and Cornelius are garbage. Especially when Ambrister has been drawing praise from coaches. They don't just throw the praise around unwarranted.

Sooooo people just off and call two guys that THE COACH have complimented for there play garbage? Blogs I tell ya..

FYI Cornelius was a LB in high school Golden moved to safety and now back to LB.

Golden said Johnson, Paul, and Armbrister all missed the scrimmage. That's 3 of our top 7 linebackers, so of course that will hurt. Combine that with Gaines just being back from injury and I could see how our linebackers struggled yesterday.

This Linebacker crew isnt going to be any different from the last 4 years. One star and a bunch of question marks. Fact is, without playmakers up front, the LB crew will struggle regardless. This defense scares me. Seems like we focused so much on improving the secondary while the DL and LB crew went backwards. Perryman will need to be an All American if this Defense is going to be any good.
