Naturally, the best player from the famed 2009 Northwestern Class went to Nebraska: Lavonte David. He was considered a nobody out of high school, but he was one of the top OLB prospects out of JC. Bill Barnwell had this to say of him:
"Now that that’s out of the way, David is quite possibly the best run-stopping linebacker in the league. Stopping isn’t even the right word. He extinguishes the running game. David seems to live in the opposing backfield at times, knifing past opposing blockers like they’re inanimate cones."

That's the recruiting game for you, 0 stars in high school, to 4 stars in JC, to top pro.

Weren't his grades awful coming out of HS? I know we **** near took the entire Northwestern team that year.. Surely if his grades where on par he would have been a Cane as well.

Yes there is a reason no one took him out of h.s., but we also didn't take him out of JC when he got his **** together. Didn't even recruit him, just frustrating because we took all the teammates except the one that didn't pan out

No he wasn't. People down here recognized his talent just like the coaches recognized he had no shot of qualifying.

Great, we get to hear about another 'local player we ignored in recruiting' story. Don't reporters get tired of telling that story?

Just to give you guys some perspective how talented Vonte was......AT MNW he covered the slot WR at times from his OLB position and would lock them down. Same thing with Sean Spence. Thank God I had the opportunity to play with those guys. Special players.

why even post this? That was under Shannon & we know what he didn't leave Golden..... If Golden left tomorrow then next coach would at least have something to work with after 2014.... I don't get Shannon he was a true Hurricane but as a Head Coach he was over his head.....

Where was this thread on any Canes' site 4 years ago?

No one was bringing up David back then, no one.

He was third best lb in that lb core that was loaded. People on grassy wanted us to offer q.taylor..who took a usf offer but flamed out academically. David looked good in juco then ddveloped under pelini,...he was a mid major type of recruit that panned out. I still think spence was bettdr...just got injured amd played in ****** scheme. David and spence are bout same size, david a lil stronger and may have a step, spsnce has more instincts and big play ability imo. Both great players
