This Saturday, QB D’Eriq King and the Miami Hurricanes are set to take on a Virginia Tech Hokies’ defense that has struggled this season and mostly recently gave up 38 points and 466 yards in VT’s loss to Liberty in their last contest.
“They have a pretty good defense, were missing a few guys the past couple of games,” King said of VT. “I think they do a bunch of good things, especially in the back end. I just have to take what’s there, you never know what coverage you’ll get and they can create a lot of pressure.”
In Miami’s last game, King dominated NC State, going 31-41 for 430 passing yards with 5 TD’s and also had 105 rushing yards, which marked season-highs in every category. After his big performance, some of the other top QB’s in college football took notice and reached out to him.
“Kyle Trask, Justin Fields - we exchanged congrats,” King said. “We all had pretty good games… Justin is a great player, me and him both train with the same QB coach, Quincy Avery. I met him a couple of times in Atlanta. Everyone in the country can see what he’s doing, he’s a great player.”
Miami’s wide receivers also had a second straight strong game vs. the Wolfpack last week after struggling to start the year, as they combined for a season-high 22 catches and 339 yards while making numerous receptions downfield.
“It’s just confidence, I’m big on confidence,” King said. “If (our mindset) is `We can’t complete the deep pass,’ it’ll continue to be that way… I have confidence in myself throwing the deep ball, and all the receivers are doing a really good job of making me look good. We have to keep taking our shots.”
As is tradition, King and WR Mike Harley got extra work in on the side earlier this week to help continue to build their connection.
“Every Monday, (Harley) texts me - we go get work in, every single Monday,” King said.
While at Houston, King actually didn’t run many zone read plays, but has been asked to do more of that at UM.
“It takes some time to get a good feel for it,” King said. “It just takes reps. We made a big emphasis over the bye week of me pulling a couple, keeping the defense on their toes. It takes time to get a good feel for it.”
As mentioned, King had 105 yards rushing on a season-high 15 carries against NC State.
“I thought it was a good amount (of carries), I like to run the football, make plays with my feet,” King said. “I was winded a little bit, but I don’t think it was super bad. The fourth quarter, we had a lot of energy left.”
