The 6'5", 285LBS JUCO freshman DT was named 1st Team All-State in the state of Mississippi after collecting 46 tackles, 8 for a loss and 3 sacks at Holmes CC this season. He graduates this May as part of the 2016 Class. Coatney said he doesn't have favorites right now and wants to take his 5 visits before deciding. He has three years to play at the next level.

He has the length that Coach Kool likes and he plays with a good motor as well as has the strength to defeat double teams. I like him as 3 Tech DT or shaded NT that can rush the passer. As a JUCO Miami would offer the best chance for extended playing time over the next 3 years more so than current SEC team Coatney is considering. An as a Georgia native there should be some familiarity with Coach Richt especially considering Coatney was a good player coming out of high school before he tore his Labrum in 2013.

Miami has the room to add to quality depth at the dline position for the 2016 Class. So lets see if the Canes jump in an offer the young man.

Here are his high school highlights from Junior year in Georgia. He showed a a very good initial burts off the line, I can see why a lot of ACC and SEC school's re recruited him out of high school.

Initially I thought it was crazy to consider him as a DT...247 listed him at 245 lb's (which means you're a DE if you're that size in college). But seeing him on the highlights makes 285 lbs more believable.

Holmes DL Josiah Coatney takes Ole Miss official visit

Holmes DL Josiah Coatney takes Ole Miss official Visit
Kim Klement USA TODAY Sports

Holmes CC defensive lineman Josiah Coatney is on an official visit at Ole Miss this weekend.

Among the reasons Josiah Coatney has attracted a lot of attention lately from Southeastern Conference recruiters is because he is 6-foot-5, 285 pounds and has great vision on the defensive line with a quick first step.

There’s something else, too.

“He’s not your typical junior college student,” Holmes Community College coach Jeff Koonz said of Coatney, who is on an official visit at Ole Miss this weekend.

The Bulldogs' defensive lineman is expected to graduate in May after discovering through a transcript evaluation that he needed only one more class at Holmes. Therefore, Coatney can enroll at a four-year university at the end of May, be immediately eligible and have four years to play three seasons.

That’s usually not the case for a junior college athlete. Many are able to play only two seasons at a four-year school. His recruitment has intensified in recent weeks because of that.

“I mean, I hate it for us because he’s such a great player,” Koonz said with a laugh. “It’s great for him. The beauty of it is he graduated in one year and one semester and that includes some summer school. But heck, he didn’t have to do any remedial classes or anything like that so he didn’t waste any time. He’s a great player, but he has also been an outstanding person since he got to Holmes.”

For Ole Miss, adding Coatney would bolster an already impressive 2016 signing class, which ranked No. 6 in the nation and third in the SEC, according to 247Sports. Benito Jones, a five-star defensive tackle and product of Wayne County, enrolled in January. Charles Wiley, a four-star defensive end out of Georgia, also enrolled early. Jones and Wiley are the only two additions to the defensive line.

Coatney, a native of Douglasville, Georgia, has offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alabama, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Florida and LSU.

He will take an official visit to Alabama next weekend and has already checked out South Carolina.
“He’s an SEC player,” Koonz said. “And that’s the best league in the country.”

He has only used 4 of 5 visits, Miami should try to land the 5th one.

The Florida Gators impress Coatney with playing time
Written by Andrew Spivey, April 10, 2016,

The Florida Gators hosted several prospects on campus over the weekend but maybe the most important visitor was an official visitor for the class of 2016.

That’s right, a class of 2016 visitor. Defensive tackle Josiah Coatney (6-5, 285, Goodman, MS Holmes JUCO) found out late in the process that he would be able to enroll this coming summer, so he’s just now taking official visits.

This weekend was his official visit to Gainesville and Coatney got the chance to meet Florida Gators head coach Jim McElwain.

“The visit was good, I got to talk to Coach Mac and the staff,” Coatney said of his Florida official visit. “It was a great time and the players respect the coaching staff. I liked it a lot.”

McElwain didn’t mince words with Coatney about needing a defensive tackle, being as the Gators didn’t sign one in February.

“He told me that he needs me there and that they’re trying to do something special there but that they’re a few pieces away from that,” he said of McElwain’s message. “He said that they were like that last season as well but that they’re looking for good guys. He’s real down to Earth and I like that. I liked him.”

Florida Gators defensive line coach Chris Rumph also expressed a big need for Coatney and explained where he could fit into the Gators defense.

“I talked to Coach Rumph a lot, he said that they need me because they have CeCe [Jefferson] playing inside but they want him to play outside,” Coatney said of Rumph’s message. “He said that they need someone who can step in and play inside next year. He said that he was going to coach me hard but love me off the field. He wants to make me better and help me make me plays.”
One of the biggest keys for any JUCO is early playing time and that’s something Coatney notices in Gainesville and is looking hard at.

“It’s very important to me to know that I can come in and play early at Florida,” he said. “I see a lot of potential to play there and play soon. I see where I can fit in at and I saw everything that I needed to see from Florida. I know I have the chance to play early there.”

Florida has a little built in edge as Coatney’s former teammate, Dre Massey, is already in Gainesville and the two spent a lot of time together this weekend.

“I spent a lot of time with Dre, he told me to come be a Gator,” Coatney said. “He said that they’re going to win at Florida and he wants me to be a part of it there. I’m glad to see him make plays there.”

Next for Coatney is a trip to see another SEC school and then he will make a decision in the coming weeks.

“I’m going to Alabama now, I’m heading there now,” he said. “This is my last visit because I’ve already went to Ole Miss, South Carolina and Florida. I plan to make my decision during the first week of May. I’m going to make the best decision for me.”

We have one roster spot left according to CMR, and much more pressing needs at CB than to use it on a DT/DE.
