Alabama offers scholarship to 8th-grade LB prospect Jesus Machado

Alabama offered a football scholarship to eighth-grade linebacker Jesus Machado on Monday, his high school head coach Dennis Marroquin told ESPN.com.

It's not the first time a young prospect has been offered a scholarship, and certainly won't be the last, but it is still a very rare occurrence.

The Crimson Tide aren't the only ones interested in Machado, a 6-foot, 195-pound defensive prospect from Hialeah (Florida) Champagnat Catholic School. In addition to his new Alabama offer, Machado also has verbal offers from Iowa State, Michigan State, NC State and West Virginia.

Current five-star linebacker prospect Dylan Moses made headlines in February 2013, when he earned an offer from LSU as an eighth grader. Moses went on to commit to the Tigers, but eventually backed off of that pledge and is now open in his process.

Verbal offers are non-binding and prospects are not allowed receive written offers until their senior season.

My take is that bamer realizes it's not dealing with a totally incompetent staff anymore and hope by offering early that gives them a leg up on Commander Richt. You can expect OOS schools to start offering SOM talent as soon as NCAA allows as we win and get that fence back up and electrified.

I don't think we can blame Genron for Valentine. Unfortunately tge kid had issues before he played for Genron. He just didn't have proper guidance. Most people didn't know about the kid until he committed to us. However we were his 3rd school. That being said I don't like these schools being created for football. Its a disservice to the kid.

If his parents or coaches actually were smart or cared about the kid they'd tell schools to not even offer him until 10th grade. There's no actual benefit for the kid in getting a fully retractable offer now but there sure will be more stress and attention.
