James Franklin on Notre Dame, Conference membership/championships/scheduling

James Franklin: "I think, again, this is no knock on Coach or Notre Dame, but I think everybody should be in a conference. I think everybody should play a conference championship game or no one should play a conference championship game. I think everybody should play the same number of conference games"
I would love it if ND officially joined the ACC in football, but I feel like Franklin is intimating that ND doesn't play a tough schedule because they aren't in a conference, not that I want to defend ND, but that's just patently untrue.

well this year they didnt play a particularly tough schedule, they beat A&M early before their QB switch and then rode big wins against GT without their QB, army, and navy.

they will be in every 12-team playoff because other conferences like the SEC / BIG10 have already publicly said they plan on scheduling easier OOC, so who is ND going to bel eft scheduling? ACC teams, except they wont have the perception of missing an ACC title game

The CFP can fix all of this yesterday if they really wanted to. They don't want to because they don't care about the sport and are letting the TV network deals drive due to revenue.

Member institutions will be ineligible to qualify for the CFP if the following criteria are not met:
1. Member institution must belong to an affiliated conference.
2. Member institution may no longer schedule FCS opponents.
3. Member institution may only schedule 1 Group of 5 opponent.
4. (In the future) Conferences will expand to a 9 game conference format.

Make all of this contingent on qualification and watch all these conferences and institution get their a$$es in line.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but during the Covid year, didn't teams exclusively play conference only games?
That's when the ACC should have said to ND, "You can play our teams this season but only if you join in the ACC, otherwise it looks like you're not playing any games this year!"

I think that would've forced them to make a tough decision.

Oh yeah... and eff Notre Dame.

If they are left out of the playoffs, they will join a conference. They make more money be independent. Having Notre Dame will strengthen the ACC.

While I agree with the point that ND needs to join a conference, any sort of scheduling coming from James Franklin is tone deaf. He didn't specifically say that, so I'm stretching his quote here. However Penn State regularly plays seven and eight home games each year in addition to always playing a super wear non-conference schedule. Plus F Sandusky and Penn State. I'm still salty that our program got beat up over boats and hoes while Penn State's sins got largely swept under the carpet.

Oh and F Notre Dame too. Always.

Let me begin by stating I have been a ND hater since I started watching CFB, and particularly during our JJ vs Holtz period.
With that said, inferring that ND should join a conference to guarantee a tougher schedule is not a guarantee. Also, as much as it pains me to say this, every time ND takes the field, the other school views it as "their bowl game", and the game all fans point to for the season. ND is going to get every schools best game.
**** them, but it's true.

For the umpteenth time:

1. ND will never join a CFB conference as long as the CFP committee allows them to qualify as a 5 seed or lower

2. ND is full of themselves & think they r bigger than the program. They like being a big fish in a small pond despite how murky the water is.

3. ND is making cash $$ records as an Independent. They are bringing in approx. $67m/yr w/ their NBC Contract, partial ACC agreement, & their new monopoly $$ Under Armour contract. Right now, they r making approximately $3m less than B1G schools.

So until it becomes a stipulation that only conference members w/in the P4 & G5 qualify for the CFP, ND is just fine. They’ll play a couple of P4 opponents, and then run through the Army’s, Navy’s, UMASS, UCONN’s, FCS, & G5 opponents going 11-1, 12-0 majority of the time.

Love your idea. Who makes these rules and gets the conferences and institutions to abide by these rules?

Unfortunately, the only way any of this happens is the conferences coming together and agreeing to such a format. The odds of it happening are slim and none. 2 of the conferences already view their conference wins as counting more than others and their losses mean less.

I would say the CFP committee does it, but they are just shills for ESPN and the conferences

The CFP was set up by the conferences. Over half of the committee is made up of ADs from various conferences. The rest are former players, coaches, and a reporter. They are the only truly "independent" members of the committee and they are in the minority. Even if they wanted to make any changes as you suggested, there is no way it passes with the majority being members of the conferences.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid we'll have to sit back and see how much of a **** show this becomes.

Agree with all you wrote, except I don't think ND will be reduced to playing 2 P4 teams a year. They are already contracted to play 5 ACC teams each year. Even if the ACC dissolves and the then P3 reduces their OOC scheduling, I still think enough would schedule ND just for the additional $$$ and guaranteed sell-out to give ND a decent schedule.

However, if they do have to resort to only playing 2 P4 opponents and the rest being G5, FCS, and independents, I think ND would have to be 12-0 to even be considered for the playoff in that situation (and even that may not be enough). In essence, they would be a G5 member - playing only 2 P4 opponents. They won't get the conference automatic bid and would basically have a resume of 2 P4 wins to show to the committee. Depending on who those 2 P4 opponents are, even being undefeated may not be enough.
