Coach Al Golden had high praise for Jake Heaps on Thursday, who again took the majority of reps with the first team at quarterback. Freshman Brad Kaaya also received work with the ones.
“Just a complete understanding, poise, experience, very coachable, not an error-repeater,” Golden said of Heaps. “Anything you correct, he gets fixed. Pleasure to work with right now.”

Told by a reporter Heaps seems to be making the extra effort to connect with his offensive line and teammates, Golden responded: “He’s that kind of guy. Glad he’s here. Mature, grateful, and doing a great job trying to bring it all together for us.”

Although he overthrew the speedy Stacy Coley and Phillip Dorsett on a pair of long passes, Heaps had several highlights Thursday, including a 9-yard touchdown pass during 11-on-11s.

His most impressive throw was to sophomore Malcolm Lewis. Heaps showed nice touch on a corner route, delivering a perfect pass over the safety for a 30-yard gain.

As high as I am on Kaayas potential, I kind of hope he can redshirt.

JMO, but the QB position shakeout seems pretty clear at the moment.

Heaps is the guy.
Kaaya's got next, or maybe a shot this year if Heaps falters.
Rosier remains a work in progress, with plenty to like.
Olsen shapes up or ships out.
Lawson comes in next year and gets to shirt and prepares for the Battle Royale between he, Rosier, and Allison after Kaaya goes to the league.

I'm sure some will try to spin this as a negative but there is no downside to any of our QBs performing well. I hope they all continue to impress.

Yeah, if he is actually performing well we all win. I just don't think he is very good, and I think Al is once again putting seniority first...unless this kid CLEARLY outplays Kaaya the rest of camp.

^^^THIS.

Barring a total meltdown, Heaps is going to start the season. Williams may step in if he's ready and Heaps struggles. Kaaya MAY get worked into some games and get some real work if he's doing that well in practice, and they think he's almost ready. That is probably the best case scenario for Kaaya at his best. If he's really on fire, and does well in limited action, and Heaps sh8ts the bed, and Williams cant go, THEN MAYBE I can see Kaaya starting later in the season. But they will do all they can to avoid having to throw him into the fire too early.

And that's the way it should be. It is virtually unheard of for a true Frosh, especially one that didn't EE, to step in and start early, and certainly not to be very successful. Its even more rare for a pro style pocket passer to do it.

I think its Heaps to start. And Williams steps in if Heaps struggles down the road. Its 50/50 as to wether Kaaya shirts. I think it may end up being up to him. Depending on how Heaps and RW are doing, and if RW is able to go, they may just let Kaaya have the option to shirt, or to see some minutes during the season here and there to get his feet wet.

I take Al at his word and whoever gets the overall best grade will start. That grade will be largely dependant on the scrimmage performance. Too early to put Heaps in the mix. Man Olsen screwed himself.

Huh?

I would say it looks like Heaps is very MUCH in the mix.

And listen to what Golden is saying. "Maturity, Poise, experience, non error maker". Those are the buzzwords you will hear right before UL. That is what he wants and will grade the QBs on. Not who is throwing a prettier spiral or has a hot hand.

3 practices in boys..it's awesome to know we actually have a legit competition but there is still 3 weeks for one to separate himself.

If Kaaya legitimately wins the job, so be it. I'll be thrilled. But I think some are underestimating just how rare and difficult it is to come in as a true Freshman (non EE for that matter), learn an offense and adjust to the speed of the game at the next level. Again, if Kaaya does that, we've got something special. But I view it as a positive that we might have pretty solid safety net in Heaps until Kaaya is ready.
