The new head coach of the Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball team Jai Lucas is making his way to South Beach. On Monday, the Hurricanes fans will get their first chance to meet the new head coach. The press conference is set to dive into his style of play. At 36, he’s all about the belief that "defense wins championships," and he stands by that idea.

"I'm defensive-minded. So, it will start on the defensive end. I'm true to the old saying, "Defense wins championships." So, we will be a very hard-nosed defensive team, we will give you multiple looks, but we are going to be able to rebound the ball, and that starts with controlling the ball and making sure the ball can't get into the paint."

Although Lucas was not the head coach at Duke, he understands what great defense looks like.

Let us take a look at some defensive stats from Duke. The Blue Devils are limiting their opponents to an average of just 61.1 points per game, which ranks sixth in the country. Additionally, they are the 29th-best team in defensive rebounding nationwide and hold the No. 3 spot in overall defensive efficiency.

He’s been the defensive coordinator for the Blue Devils, and he led Duke to back-to-back top-20 finishes in adjusted defensive efficiency according to KenPom.

The Texas team that Jai was on from 2010 to 2011 had one of the best defenses in the country. They would straight up get upon you, as they ranked in the top five for defensive efficiency and forced over 12 turnovers per game. He understands what it takes for defense to win games.

He’s gonna need to bring in some bigger guys, as you see with Duke because their success on defense comes from being so long and athletic. If you can show that kind of length, you can really make an impact on defense. That’s why Lucas has to focus on picking up some size, whether it's through the transfer portal or recruiting.

Check out the full interview he did with the university:

Return of Leonard Hamilton
It's too early to say how successful or not this hire of Lucas will be until we play some games and get at least a season or so under our belts. I am trying to stay optimistic. I think he has all the tools but my concern is his lack of head coaching experience. We'll see. I am hopeful here.
