Is our D-Line really that bad?

Everyone bashes on the Dline, and certainely is not a great unit. But I watched the D-line pretty closely last game...and my impression wasn't that bad.

Mostly what I noticed is that we were splitting EJ out very wide practically playing nickel on the slot, had Paul 6-7 yards off, and Perryman split out 3-4 yards outside the tackle, and another 7 yards off the line. In this alignment I just don't see how you can ask our DL to make a play without any linebacker support. We consistently had 5 guys in the box. When we did go to a more traditional alignment with 6-7 in the box we really did a good job shutting them down.

I really don't think we can expect them to consistently make plays 4 and 5 on 6 blockers.

Last game was their best of the season. They are that bad but lets hope we are seeing progress. As for the LBs, they were a spread team so that's why our LBs were in the coverage they were in. I don't understand why we don't use more DBs when teams go to 3 and 4 WR sets though. I know our corners are bad too but putting LBs in space on WRs isn't the smartest thing.

Agreed, and on that sweep they were running out of the shot gun....there was nobody anywhere close to being able to make a play. The end is pinching inside....not sure if he's got contain or what, but they did it everytime. We were just outmanned at the edge. Best case scenario we make a play 6-7 yards downfield. I'm just pointing to the fact that when we were in more conventional alignments we did pretty well against a very good oline.

You gotta put guys in positions to make plays

This is an adjustment (or lack there of) that I don't understand. CB would be better in the zone and would allow the remaining 2 LBs to be in the box if we are playing our cover 3. We saw it some vs UNC and thought it was pretty effective. It also allows us to show a few more looks in attempts to confuse the offense. This concept would probably be the #1 thing I would like to hear D'O and Golden thought on.

Wish this board was able to have an intelligent discussion about the D, adjustments, etc but that ship has sailed here.

Clearly we are leaving in the extra backer to stop the run, evident by our stout run defense.

You can't have an intelligent discussion about a circus

Enough with this two gap crap.

Do you guys even watch the game? I counted numerous times where our DTs and DE just fired into a gap. Go back and watch the game again Einsteins..and just watch our DL. Not surprising that on many of these one gap blasts off the line they were slashing away from the play and had no regard where the ball was run. It seemed on Pass rush situations we double gapped it and were content to just tie up with the O Line.

When they double teamed any one of our our D linemen they drove him 8 yards off the ball and into our LBs like Paul who don't seem to have the knack for navigating the wash.

Our D Line is atrocious. Not trying to hammer any of the kids but its a fact. If you don't see that as a major problem for our D you aren't paying attention.

Go back and watch highlights from our 88 team, Tez and Maryland were 3 yards across the line of scrimmage as soon as they hiked the ball. They created such disruption i could have played CB back then. 28-0 against #1 FSU. D Line sets the tone for the rest of the Defense.

Name one good defense either College or NFL that had a bad D Line. I will be waiting.

Einstien's? So we are not as good our 88 team? Bold man....good job. And I'm sure our guys were firing into gaps on their own with no account for assignment, slant, etc...good point.

Let's first look at our DEs

We have a guy, his name is Shayon Green and he is a starter at one DE. Shayon has had 3 major knee operations in his tenure. Shayon prior to this year played in 6 total games and switched positions from LB to DE. He is a starter.

We have another guy, his name is Anthony Chickillo and he is a starter at one DE. He came in last year and was forced to start. Instead of redshirting like most freshman on the line, he was thrown into the position as a starter. Now I have no doubt that next year he will start to really perform (in his third season) and play some very good DE, he gets no help today.

Undersized DE take your pick:

Kelvin Cain or Tyriq McCord (True Freshman)

Now for our DT starters

We have a guy, his name ______________ because this guy changes every game. In fact this starter doesn't even know he is the starter because he doesn't stand out. Sometimes he is a freshman named Earl Moore or Corey King. Sometimes he is sophomore named Jalen Grimble or Olson Pierre. The bottom line is this starter is an underclassman and thrown in there. He normally would still be riding the pine and not in the 2 Deep but due to the lack of bodies...he is thrown into the mix.

We have a guy who they call a "Veteran" he is the guy who most teams rely on. Like the other DT starter, his name changes too. Sometimes they call him Luther Robinson, a player that switched positions a few times and recorded 3 tackles his ENTIRE CAREER. Sometimes he goes by Darius Smith, another out of shape lineman with no other offers coming out of JUCO. Darius was recruited as a filler by the staff because they need bodies at the position.

Miscellaneous

The best DE doesn't appear on the roster because he choose, after missing 6 games due to suspension, to leave early for the draft...his name is Olivier Vernon.

Another DE wanted desperately to come back but the NCAA said NO, his name is Adewale Ojomo and he is playing for the New York Football Giants.

Finally, a dude who is enrolled but can't seem to catch a break. His name is Curtis, Curtis Porter. At times, this difference maker looked good but due to his fingernail or appendix, he can't get on the field.

Listen I am not a fan of Coach D but this stuff above in its current state is a utter ******* joke.

Outstanding post!

I understand that people have problems with this defensive staff (I do myself).

Let's say there is a DL coach out there in America. We will call him Jon Pulermo and Jon is the best DL coach in the World. Given the above, how much higher would your expectations be for the unit? Mine would still remain pretty low.

Now back to our staff:

Next year, if the following happens, things could change SIGNIFICANTLY

1. Curtis get's healthy and comes back to start from day one

2. Our sophomores have a productive off-season (weight room, nutrition etc.)

Chick, Grimble, Pierre

3. Our Veteran (because Darius Smith is gone) gets stronger.

4. Toby Johnson very good JUCO DT, not a filler like Darius Smith, comes to Miami.

We haven't had a truly good DL since Pallermo left.

Yes. Guys like Moore and King should have never been offered scholarships. They are not Miami level players.

I disagree on Moore, I just think anyone with expectations of a true UNDERSIZED freshman DT at this point is unrealistic.

King, I don't know much about. He was more of a filler because of the need at DT. When Golden got here, after NSD, he took him and Smith more out of need then want.

Moore is the same player now as he was as a sophomore in HS. Kid did not continue to grow and develop. FIU/Ole Miss type kid.

These guys don't have any talent. There is literally no hope the defense will ever be special playing them.

I know I don't believe in Rivals or Scout (in terms of ACCURATE offers) but he had 13-14 BCS Offers (UF, FSU, USCe, USF, UNC, Minnesota, Rutgers, USC, TTU, WSU, Purdue and Tenn). Even if half of those are BS, he is above an FIU kid.

Out of curiosity, you think he has no chance to succeed here.

No, I don't, because he just doesn't have the talent to start for what Miami should be. I bolded the offers I might believe. The others offered very early on expecting him to grow and develop and it didn't happen.
