Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Hunter Knighton is unconscious and in University of Miami Hospital after a Monday workout session at the school, two sources close to UM said Tuesday.
Knighton, who was brought to UM Hospital on Monday, is from Pottstown, Pa. and graduated from The Hun School of Princeton, N.J. His parents are with him at the hospital.
Details of his condition and what happened to him specifically have not been revealed.
Listed on the UM roster as 6-6 and 278 pounds, Knighton missed the entire 2013 football season following shoulder surgery.
Knighton attended the 2012 Al Golden Football Camp and was an early UM enrollee in January 2013. He was rated as a three-star offensive tackle by ESPN, 247Sports.com, Rivals.com and Scout.com. He played on the offensive and defensive lines in high school.
The day after he told UM coach Al Golden he would sign with the Miami Hurricanes, Knighton told The Times of Trenton that he had found the “right place’’ in Miami.
“Coach Golden said the Miami staff was split as to which side of the ball I would be on,’’ Knighton said. “He told me I would be a heck of a defensive lineman, but that my potential was limitless on offense.’’
Knighton told the paper he took official visits to Boston College, Boise State and Purdue.
“The school and the program are nothing like people on the outside view it,’’ Knighton told The Times of Trenton. “I was completely blown away by the place. It is a great school academically with a tremendous coaching staff.’’
