How do you think Coley's offense differs from Jimbo's?

Hey guys,

I might be over-analyzing but I was watching a couple of FSU's games last year on mgodbold1080's channel to get an idea on what Coley might bring and their offense lacks so much creativity and overall looked routine.

If Manuel was lined up under center, I swear 90% of the time it's a run. They lined up in shotgun like 80% of the time in a 2-back set. I watched the UF vs FSU game and while Pease is mixing it up and lining up in different formations, Jimbo's offense is lined up in shotgun every play with like 2 formations.

I know Coley wants to incorporate elements of the spread but if I see that shotgun 2-back formation every play I'll be mad.

Also, it's funny how Jimbo mentions how his offense is so complicated and Coley needed to be involved in it for 5 years to be given the keys to it but, quite frankly, it isn't really good. It is not explosive, I don't see a lot of big plays and it has never come up big against good competition(maybe against Clemson but Clemson's offense was still better to watch).

Thoughts?

This won't even be able to be answered til after a couple games if not half the season.

Good observations on Jimbo's offense. How many games did you watch? Sounds like it was just the FSU vs UF game.

The difference is Coley aint scared to be aggressive, air it out, and open up the offense unlike Jimbo...

example is how explosive FSU's offense looked versus Clemson, when Coley was allowed to call the plays, and how conservative FSU's offense looked the rest of the season when Jimbo called the plays as usual.

is that a fact?

how come coley was only allowed to call plays that one game?

First Coley will run Jedd Fisch's playbook, just choose the plays from the book. second go watch the spring game and that is what UM's offense will look like, think more 1 back with H-back in motion or split backs with mo hagen destroying a defender . there are few othe thgreads about this.

Go Canes

They said the offense will be mostly what fisch ran last year with coley adding some things and putting his own spin on some things so morris won't have to learn a new playbook.

Cant bring myself to watch one game of theirs. Coley has come in and learned the terminology that was already in place. I would think most of our playbook has remained the same, aside from some changes Coley has made. Golden has mentioned some that Coley has learned our system numerous times.

Play calling I think will greatly differ from Fisch (Got way too cute at times IMHO, but very good OC). I would hope that our red-zone and 3rd down efficiency will improve, and that we can have a more physical approach upfront.

5 Days until we get a small glimpse. Don't think we show much, until uif

Jed Fisch was the best offensive coordinator we have had here in a very long time. If Coley is at least in that ball-park with Fisch then our offense is going to do big big things this year.

Jed Fisch gets my respect because he made Jacory Harris better. He made Morris look like a stud.

Truth of the matter is, we don't know what to expect from Coley other than hoping he doesn't look how he did when he coached at FIU.

Coley is an unknown commodity and we will all know how aggressive or passive he is come Saturday. Stay tuned, this could be one **** of a season.

Yeah my brother is an FSU fan so he is all entrenched with what goes on there as we all are w/ UM..... but he said James Coley was allowed to call the plays that one game for what reason i dont know, but he showed Jimbo up as far as play calling goes.

He says that Jimbo doesnt allow their QBs freedom to run the offense like how Morris can at Miami and he always freezes up when it looks like the game could go either way. (The UVa game when FSU lost at home, the year before, was another example that a lot of Jimbo critics called him out for acting like a ***** w/ the offense.)

But If you watch that Clemson game you'll see how multiple and wide open that offense was the entire game.... they used all of the weapons that had available and was able to out score an offense like Clemson's. James Coley called the plays that entire game.

When Jimbo called the NcState game he was heavily criticized for that loss b/c how the offense looked that game was night and day in comparison to how it looked during the Clemson game.... FSU fans believe if they went w/ a more aggressive offense like at Clemson, the NcState upset would've never come close to happening.

Jimbo that entire 2nd half played so conservative b/c he had the lead that he didnt use any of their other rbs besides Thompson or even try to spread the field w/ multiple receivers to exploit their defense. They played right into Ncstates hand, by constantly sending Chris Thompson up the middle to get banged on by NCSt's physical and over aggressive defense. Jimbo was just trying to run out the clock instead of win the game and it came back to bite hime.

Jimbo is a weak *** when it comes to aggressive play-calling given how much tools he has at his disposal at Florida State.

I doubt he ever changes.

Exactly all you have to do is look at all the receiver talent FSU has had that is just wasted away on the bench... Jimbo is overrated when it comes to offensive play-calling.

Let's hope Coley's is different from Jimbo's cause I thought wide right's O sucked when you consider all those "great recruits" they always get. Jimbo is worse than Bobby. If Coley has too nole in him, he will have to go. I am hoping he is much better at using our weapons and not just qb right, qb left, qb run around and hope for best. Want QB dissecting other D not out running it.

Here is a link to his offense at FIU in 2007, the year of the brawl. This was his one year as undisputed OC coming off two years as an offensive assistant with Saban's Dolphins, before going to FSU as TE coach.
Poor talent, ranked 118 in total offense, 119 in scoring offense. Had a 55-45% run to pass ratio with a running QB. Anyone remember that game in 2007 in terms of style of O? Power running spread like Florida with Tebow? This isn't necessarily an indicator anyway, given the lack of talent at FIU. A good coach will tailor the scheme to the talent at hand.
