I was looking at the list to break a 3 team tie in the ACC.
(Once tie has been reduced to two teams, the two-team tiebreaker format is used)
#1 - Combined head-to-head record among the tied teams.
#2 - Records of the tied teams within the division.
#3 - Head-to-head competition versus the team within the division with the best overall (divisional or conference) record, and proceeding through the division. Multiple ties within the division will be broken first to last.
#4 - Overall record for non-divisional teams.
#5 - Combined record versus all common non-divisional teams.
#6 - Record versus common non-divisional with the best overall Conference (divisional and non-divisional record) and proceeding through the other common non-divisional teams based on their order of finish within the division.
#7 - The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series Standings following the conclusion of regular season games shall be the divisional representative in the ACC Championship Game, unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the ACC Championship Game.
#8 - The representative shall be chosen by a draw.
I've been reading that there is a a scenario that we lose out on the 3 way tiebreaker if we finish tied w/ GT & UNC at 5-3. I couldn't find anyone to break it down so if I understood all of the tie break rules correctly, here is the scenario where we lose out on winning the division. Assuming all 3 teams beat the teams necessary to be tied at 5-3:
Tiebreaker #1: UM beat GT but lost to UNC. GT beat UNC but lost to UM. UNC beat UM but lost to GT. Each team has a 1-1 record amongst all tied teams.
Tiebreaker #2: UM beat GT, VT & Duke. Lost to NC & VA. GT beat VA, NC & Duke. Lost to UM & VT. UNC beat VT, UM & VA. Lost to Duke & GT. Each team has a 3-2 record within the division.
Tiebreaker #3: Since the top 3 teams are tied you move onto the 4th place team in the division. It could end up being a) a tie (VA & Duke) b) another tie (Duke & VT) or c) a 3 way tie (VT, VA & Duke) at 3-5.
a) If it's a tie between VA & Duke, you go to the head-to-head record to break the tie. Duke beat VA so that makes them the 4th place team. UM & GT beat Duke. UNC lost to Duke. That leaves UM & GT. UM beat GT so they win the division.
b) If it's a tie between Duke & VT, you go to the head-to-head record to break the tie. VT beat Duke so that makes them the 4th place team. UM & NC beat VT. GT lost to VT. That leaves UM & NC. NC beat UM so they win the division. Since NC is not eligible, UM would win.
c) If it's a 3 way tie this is where it gets confusing.
#1: all teams will have a 1-1 record against each other.
#2: all teams will have a 2-3 divisional record
#3: can't do this tiebreaker because we're still trying to figure out the tiebreaker for 1-3
#4: all teams will have a 1-2 non-divisional record
#5: 3 teams did not have a common non-divisional opponent.
#6: 3 teams did not have a common non-divisional opponent.
#7: 3 teams will not be ranked in the BCS.
#8: team chosen by draw.
If the team chosen is VT, UM & NC beat VT & GT lost to VT. GT would then be eliminated. NC beat UM so they would win the division. Since NC is not eligible, UM would win.
If the team chosen is Duke, UM & GT beat Duke. NC lost to Duke. NC would then be eliminated. UM beat GT so they would win the division.
If the team chosen is VA, GT & NC beat VA. UM lost to VA. UM would then be eliminated. GT beat NC so they would win the division.
If any of following happens:
1) Duke beats GT
2) BC beats VT
3) VA beats NC
4) VT beats VA
5) MD beats NC
it will eliminate any possibility of us losing a tie breaker.
If there is any aspect of this wrong please let me know so I can fix it.
