The event, which will attract 42 high schools in two days, is also the hard work of Miami-Dade County Athletic Director, Cheryl Golden (who matched up the scrimmage opponents), Broward County Athletic Director Rocky Gillis and Gary Pigott of the Florida High School Athletic Association to see if it was possible to bring football programs – two weeks into spring – in for scrimmages, which most would host at their own schools this time of year.

“The idea,” Riveron said last year during the planning, “was to give the officials, who were taking part in the teaching seminar a chance to jump out of the classroom and apply the things we we're teaching them. It was also designed to put some of our schools in the spotlight as well, giving them additional exposure."

This year, the event will take place on Friday, May 10th and Saturday May 11th at Florida International University's main campus. It will give fans an early preview what this spring will be like. Media and recruiting websites from across the state will be on hand along with an opportunity for college coaches to watch as well - during the spring evaluation period.

The Event

The referee training scrimmage will feature 42 teams in 21 “scrimmages” on a 40 yards worth of playing field. There will be between 4 and 5 games going on at once with two games on each field.

There will be no special teams.

Larry Blustein gave a full, detailed explanation of the event and the schedule in his South Florida High School Sports column.

Games I’m Watching

Northwestern vs. Coral Reef – Bulls head coach Stephen Field has been looking forward to his second year because he believes his Northwestern team has the maturity and experience to compete for a state title. Meanwhile Coral Reef has the dangerous combination of Nicodem Pierre and Jacob McCrary to test that Bulls secondary.

American vs. Blanche Ely & Edison vs. Southridge: Both of the 7 p.m. games on the main field are going to feature a lot of youth. And if all four programs can hold on to their young kids we could be seeing some teams with high expectations in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Carol City vs. Miramar: The Patriots have a plethora of talent in the secondary but Carol City might try to come at them with a physical game so we can get a better idea of how good Miramar is up front.

Norland vs. Plantation: A great opportunity to see Plantation’s top athlete, Chris Lammons, against a well-coached group at Norland. Quarterback Taron James is eager to show on-lookers that he has the goods to be Norland’s playmaker at QB.

Class of 2014 Players I’m Watching

Ermon Lane, WR, Homestead: Arguably the best pass catcher in the southeast and possibly the nation.

Mike Smith, DE, Miami Northwestern – Smith could establish himself as the most-desired pass rusher in Miami-Dade County this season with a strong spring. He is a natural playmaker with dynamic athleticism.

Brandon Powell, RB, Deerfield Beach – Powell finished the 2012 season with numbers that could compare to any top back in the state.

Tyre Brady, WR, South Dade – Brady could play on either side of the ball but college coaches will be looking at what he does on the offensive end this weekend.

JoJo Robinson, ATH, Miami Northwestern – Robinson, a soft FSU commitment, is one of the more versatile athletes in the state. He could fill a need at wide receiver, running back, return game or the defensive secondary.

John Battle, DB, Hallandale – A long, rangy prospect that probably doesn’t get the coverage he deserves. Battle is a smart player with good ball skills.

Jake McCrary, WR, Coral Reef – McCrary’s star has fallen a little bit in the past few months but he can get things rolling again if he shows the skills he displayed as a sophomore.

Alin Edouard, QB, Hialeah – The Miami commit has the physical attributes but now he has the opportunity to prove he can make smart plays with the football.

Kendrick Edwards, WR, Norland – Still fairly young to the game, Edwards is a big prospect (6-foot-6, 215 pounds) that could see a lot of interest over the summer.

Andre Godfrey, DB, Miramar – A physical, athletic defensive back from a program known from producing them. No surprise Godfrey’s recruitment has gained a lot of traction in the last few months.
