Al Golden is a mediocre defensive coach.
We've seen it for three years and it's pretty clear Coach D's scheme sucks. As a former DC and with how close the two are, I highly doubt he's running something Golden isn't very comfortable with. So in many ways this is Golden's defense.
The implications of this are simple, for Golden to be successful here he'll need to be a very strong CEO that always has good coordinators who carry him. With how fluid CFB coaching is, I can't see a coach without a strong point (offense or defense) having long term success at a school this way especially at Miami. If you're performing well you're going to be losing assistant, so there needs to be a strong base.
Look at the majority of the good coaches in CFB, they usually have a specialty.
Jimbo (offense), Saban (defense), Meyer (offense), Shaw (offense), Malzahn (offense), Kelly (offense), Carroll (defense), etc.
Mack Brown and Beamer are two coaches I can come up with right now that have enjoyed sustained success just being "CEO" types. Texas has money to throw around on assistants and Foster staying at Tech as long as he has is very rare.
