2020 Miami Central CB Jalen Harrell has been a hot name on the recruiting circuit lately, racking up Power 5 offers from Oregon, Tennessee, Nebraska, Georgia Tech, and Maryland in the past week or so. He added one more on Sunday, when the local Miami Hurricanes pulled the trigger on an offer when Harrell was on campus for an unofficial visit.
“It was amazing, I can’t even explain the feeling,” Harrell said. “I was getting a tour of the facility and went into coach (Manny) Diaz's office and he told me the great news.”
Harrell grew up watching the Canes as a Florida boy and was thrilled to have a scholarship to “The U”.
“I grew up loving the Hurricanes since both of my parents always liked them and, now that I have the offer, it’s mind blowing,” Harrell said. “My interest is very high, always has been.”
Lately, the contact with the Canes has really picked up, and Harrell has felt like a priority to Miami. After getting his foot in the door with coach DeMarcus Van Dyke, Harrell has grown his connection with the rest of the UM staff.
“Well, at first, I was in contact with just coach Van Dyke, but now coach Diaz, coach (Mike) Rumph, coach (Stephen) Field, and coach (Jorge) Baez,” Harrell said. “So far, so good.”
On his Sunday visit to campus, Harrell got the grand tour of the program and used the time to start getting comfortable with Diaz’s new staff.
“The visit was awesome, they showed me the new indoor field with all the offices and the film room and it was an amazing experience,” Harrell said. “We were mainly focusing on getting me used to the new coaching staff and my recruitment process so far. I like the changes Diaz is making already.”
As for future trips, Harrell is already set on making a visit to see an ACC rival this spring, and plans on seeing more programs during the summer.
“I’m gonna try to get up to Clemson this spring and some other schools during the summer,” Harrell said.
Harrell plans on taking his recruitment slow and making sure he makes the right choice for his future. The 6’2” 180 pound prospect will base his final decision on how well he feels the program can develop him for the next level.
“There’s no specific time I’ll commit, I’m taking my recruitment slowly,” Harrell said. “I’m looking for development and stability in the school I pick.”
