Guys Playing Out of Position

The more I think about this, the more I realize how many guys have either switched positions or just DO NOT look like they should be playing where they are...

Shayon Green: Played LB most of his career (whenever he was healthy), but just is not built well for a DE...or experienced enough

Tyrone Cornelius: Believe he started off as a safety. Looks like a CB playing OLB though imo...

AJ Highsmith: Used to play QB...

Denzel Perryman: Love the guy, and he's playing well at MLB, but I still think he's better suited for OLB

Kelvin Cain: Just doesn't seem big or strong enough for DE...

Thurston Armbrister: Has good size, but just recently switched to LB and needs time to learn the position.

Now I realize that most of the guys are playing these positions because we don't have anyone else to and we need them, but that is exactly why I don't like our defensive scheme.

We just can't expect to only rush four guys almost every single play and either pressure the QB or get pressure in the backfield. We just can't. Our defensive line is way too inexperienced/a little undersized. When I look at a lot of other schools play it's amazing how much bigger their linebackers and lineman look than ours. They have massive guys that can fight off blocks and actually make plays.

I mean do we EVER blitz a CB or a Safety? Ever? We RARELY blitz LB'ss and when we do they line up right next to the DE before the play starts and get easily picked up every time. Let's send two or even three guys some plays! Get some pressure on the QB or at least get pressure in the backfield. Especially against a QB like Klein who isn't known for his arm, even if we don't sack him force him to make a bad throw. As much as some people don't trust our db's, I would rather trust them in man coverage with us blitzing two lb's (or a lb and a safety), then just letting all our lb's and db's drop into coverage and giving the QB forever to throw the ball.

Maybe I'm wrong, but something needs to change. I watched so many games this weekend where teams were sending the house on some plays or at least mixing it up. Blitz a corner and a lb, blitz three lbs, blitz two linebackers, blitz a safety and a lb...there are so many options and we do NONE of them. At the very least you keep the offense confused. Instead we gave Kansas State (and BC) nearly the same look on defense EVERY time. It's one thing to lineup in the same look, but at least run some blitzes out of it. Just do SOMETHING to confuse the offense though and keep them guessing.

Sorry I had to get that rant off. I know D'onofrio is a professional and I'm just a guy who has been a big football fan for years so what I'm saying may make no sense, but the more I think about it I can't see how it would hurt to try a little of what I mentioned.

The whole "we have to run a simple offense with our personnel" makes absolutely no sense to me. I mean we've given up 80+ points in two games, it can't get much worse than that. Maybe our guys won't understand other schemes, but at this point it can't hurt to try because it can't get much worse than last week. Ok I'm done.

Cornelius started at OLB and was moved to safety for about half a year by Golden and staff.

Green played DE in high school and never looked comfortable at LB in college. He probably should have been converted sooner.

Denzel is our best LB and if he had any decent play from the DTs would be really showing out.

Cain is undersized and I figured he'd mean we gave more 3-4 looks when he's in at DE but they've just lined him up and let him go at it at DE - so yeah definitely agree at this point.

Highsmith was someone that was going to convert eventually - just was delayed cause Cook and Cannon transferred.

Armbrister just needs time to grow into the position more. Ideally he wouldn't have seen the field outside of special teams yet.

and i wouldn't mind rushing 4 if we disguised which 4 were coming. that's where having Cain as a DE could be advantageous since he could stand up and Eddie Johnson or whatever other LB could hover near the line and both could show blitz and only 1 come. just would make the offense account for both ahead of time and hopefully open up something for another player.

We are undersized accross the board bicho feels....ppl hail keith bryant as the savior and Bicho likes him very much sharing his alma matter but he is more suited to be a rush DE in a gap control scheme.

time it will take.....Kelvin Cain and company suck first of all and also are ill suited for the D we will soon run.

Cain fits the soon to be run defense better than the current defense. overall i think the talent fits the 3-4 better - still wouldn't be good but guys wouldn't be as undersized. Smith at NT. Chick at DE doing his best Chris Long as a sophomore impersonation. And Robinson/Pierre/whoever as the last DE until Hamilton is ready to take over next year or later this year. Let the young DEs like Terry, McCord, etc just go ahead and learn that OLB spot now while we are going to suck either way. Plus wouldn't force them to be lined up straight up over a guy who outweighs them by 70 lbs each play.

so many banged up LBs might be why we stay away from it, but once those guys get healthy later in the year I'm hoping we see a lot more of the 3-4. no point in delaying the switch.
