I really like the vast improvement Gus has made in a little time. he looks faster, stronger and just better as a runner. if him,Duke, and Yearby end of splitting time, i think we will have a great chance of wearing down defenses with a speed and power combo. Im so ready for the spring game and season!
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Running back Gus Edwards had one of his best runs of the spring during Miami’s second scrimmage last week.

Edwards took the handoff and followed his pulling guard to the edge. Once he turned the corner he raced for a 25-yard touchdown.
“The guard pulled and that allowed me to bounce the run outside and that left me one-on-one with the safety and it was just a race to the end-zone from there,” Edwards said. “It was a big play for the offense and nice to break a long one like that.”
Edwards was pleased with the overall performance by the offense during the second scrimmage.
“I feel like we definitely progressed from the first scrimmage,” Edwards said. “We executed better and made some more plays.”
Miami is holding their spring game this Saturday and Edwards is looking to put his stamp on the game.
“I just want to do better than I did in the last scrimmage,” Edwards said. “I want to be able to have some longer runs and score more than one touchdown. My goal is to just get better with each scrimmage, so hopefully I can do that.”
Edwards has received the majority of the first team running back reps this spring and been pleased with the progress he has made. Edwards is confident he is a much better player than during the 2013 season.
“I think I got a lot better with the mental errors I made last year,” Edwards said. “I am not making nearly as many errors right now. I know my pass blocking assignment and I know the playbook very well compared to last year. I am just more comfortable out here.”
Miami was dealt some tough news this week with the injury of senior quarterback Ryan Williams, who sustained a torn ACL.
“That is real unfortunate,” Edwards said. “Ryan was a great leader for us. We just have to rally together now as a team. It didn’t look bad when it happened. I was surprised that the injury was serious. He was going to have a great season. He knows the offense like the back of his hand and we are going to miss his leadership.”
Edwards has liked what he has seen from redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Olsen this spring.
“Kevin is talented,” Edwards said. “I think he can do it too. I have a lot of faith in him. I know he is still learning. He is good at the two minute drill. He always ends up pulling the two minute drill well.”
Regardless of who UM’s quarterback is next season, Edwards is confident the offense will be productive.
“I feel like we can be a very good offense this year,” Edwards said. “We have playmakers all over the field and the offensive line has been very good. When we execute our assignments, we are very tough to stop. I am excited about what we can do this year.”
Edwards ran for 338 yards and five touchdowns as a true freshman last season.
