I attended a luncheon sponsored by the Dade County Bar Association where Coach Golden was the guest speaker. D$ and Tano were in attendance. Below are some highlights from his speech and the Q&A afterwards. You can find the full story at CanesTailgating.com

• Golden opened up his speech saying Donna Shalala told him not to expect seeing this many lawyers in one room until June. (Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. NCAA are you listening?)
• He talked about the culture and the challenges the program had to overcome when he took over. Golden referenced the iconic canes teams of yesteryear and pointed out that swagger was a byproduct of the teams’ hard work. You always hear about swagger, but fans are not told about the excruciating workouts in the South Florida sun to get to that point.
• “Winning begets winning.”
• Coach talked about what he looks for in recruits. He almost laughed when asked if he followed the “star system”. He told the crowd that you can’t evaluate a player by tape alone – hence the reason why UM spends so much money flying coaches around the country to meet players in person. The staff looks for intangibles and will immediately offer players that fit their mold.
o To this end, Golden discussed Alex Figueroa. He joked about the level of teams we had to fight off to get him and stated that he will be an excellent player in Miami’s “system”. He noted that both of Figueroa’s parents were Marines and Figueroa’s locker is kept to military specs for organization and cleanliness.
• Golden stated that he reads every night. While at Temple, he got the idea to run 1 day football camps from a book he read on Southwest Airlines. The way Southwest entered the market and competed against the TWAs and Deltas of the world was by running completely full, smaller planes. Instead of trying to compete against the likes of Penn State for players to come to weeklong camps in Philly, Golden decided to run one day camps. Temple went from 0 campers to 2000 campers in 2 years’ time.
• When asked if college players should get paid, Golden cautiously answered that players should be given a stipend. He took the opportunity to launch into the quality of education University of Miami players receive (their scholarship is worth $57,000 per year).
• Golden sidestepped one question and later commented that he was prelaw at Penn State.

I know it’s still basketball season, but I can’t wait for the scrimmage this Saturday at Traz-Powell. Hope to see some of you guys there.

Very good event and Golden was excellent. Didnt realize how funny he was. Golden should be commended for taking time out of his day for these unpaid speaking engagements. He and Coach L do an excellent job marketing their programs.
