Golden said biggest concerns are DL, CB, WR and RB. "There’s a lot of needs for us right now, lots of voids to fill."

Hmm 82 players. Wonder if that means we will be having a lot of attrition.
 
Sounds like he's anticipating a three-player/scholarship sanction next year.

'Cause we normally can have 85. Right?
 
He's very pleased with UM's recruiting efforts, and feels strongly that "the majority'' of kids that have verbally committed "will honor their commitments and stay with us.''

He said among the positions UM needs, the Canes need cornerbacks "terribly.'' He said the Canes are "still looking ahead at a big-time linebacker, we're still looking ahead at a big-time defensive lineman and we're still looking to see if there's a tight end that fits what we're trying to do out there.''

Golden said re: recruiting, "There's not any position not represented now other than kicking and tight end. We're not quite Noah's ark. We're not getting two of everything but we're getting one of everything and in many places we're getting two. We need to do that.''

* He said at least seven players will enroll early, including junior college transfer Ladarius Gunter, a cornerback out of Fort Scott (Kansas) CC. There could be more early enrollees, but he just wanted to give the minimum amount he expects. Some who are academically deficient could go to prep school. You guys likely already know that the two young qbs, Preston Dewey and Gray Crow, are ready to go for spring. But Golden wouldn't name anybody other than Gunter.

n closing, Golden made it clear that although in a perfect world you hold open at least a spot or two for any surprise signees after signing day, he "would be more inclined at this juncture to go ahead and try to finish this class off, given the momentum and strength that we've received here in the last couple of weeks. I would strike while we're hot. We're on a roll right now. We're doing very well.''

Wouldn't sanctions affect the year after, since it would limit how many we can sign for 2013 not 2012

Golden admitted Thursday that he was "surprised" by the departures of some underclassmen, especially because they made decisions
without waiting to hear their draft status from an NFL advisory committee. Among the five, only Miller seems likely to be selected in the first round.
"It was a month in advance of the NFL deadline," Golden said. "In 15 years of coaching, I've never seen that."
Golden said he also wasn't expecting the NCAA to reject starting defensive lineman Adewale Ojomo's bid for a sixth season of eligibility.
With the loss of Ojomo, the Hurricanes will have to replace six defensive linemen, all of who started at least one game in 2011.

On UM’s recruiting as we inch closer to National Signing Day on Feb. 1: “The last two weeks are the hardest two weeks of recruiting. It’s like the bonus round. As players start coming off the board, every decision a player makes is magnified tremendously because there’s no Plan B, so to speak. This is a critical time for us. We still have a lot of work to do in the last two weeks. I’m excited about the direction we’re going and the class we’re putting together. I think our staff has done a great job.”

On 15 of UM’s approximate 30 recruits from the South Florida area: “Our numbers in a lot of ways should mirror which players in the state have produced the most NFL players over the last 10 years. Dade County makes up about 17 percent and Broward makes up about 12 percent and Palm Beach makes up about 10 percent, so we want to do a great job there. Where we’ve made a lot of progress as a program is in central Florida, Orlando, up in Tampa and all the way up into Jacksonville. I think that’s where we’re making a lot of progress in the recruiting wars. The guys that are committing to us is part of the story. The other part of the story is who’s coming to [UM] games, who’s coming to junior days, things of that nature. I think in a very short period of time, we’ve made a lot of progress in the state of Florida.”
