**Miami’s passing offense did not look sharp in this game. The offensive line left QB Brad Kaaya susceptible to pressure all night long and his accuracy was not there. On the other hand, the running game wore down the Owls and for the second straight week. Some offensive notables, both good and bad:
-Mark Walton was the first Hurricanes player since Tyrone Moss to rush for four touchdowns in a game since October 2005 against UNC in the Orange Bowl. Walton is also the first Canes player to score four touchdowns in a game since Mike James at Georgia Tech in 2012.
-The carries count between Miami’s two running backs was split pretty evenly, as Walton had 17 and Yearby had 20.
-Yearby and Walton both went over 100 yards for the second straight week.
-Gus Edwards did not receive a carry in the game for Miami.
-Solid performance from Canes freshman WR Ahmmon Richards, including a couple of 3rd down conversions. His second reception was a 13-yarder that set up Miami’s first score (Mark Walton TD rush)
-WR Stacy Coley was targeted 7 times by Brad Kaaya, but only had 4 catches for 38 yards. Similarly, David Njoku was targeted 6 times and only caught 2 passes.
-WR Dayall Harris recorded his first reception as a Hurricane.
**The Hurricanes’ defense carried over much of their performance from last week against FAMU. Notable performers:
LB Michael Pinckney – He was all over the field on Saturday night and probably had the best performance of any defensive player. 9 tackles, 1.5 sacks
DE Chad Thomas – Thomas had 3 tackles including a sack on Saturday night. He seems much more active this season, regardless of Miami’s opponents, as compared to his first two
DE Joseph Jackson – The freshman pass rusher recorded his first sack as a Hurricane. He had two sacks total.
S JaQuan Johnson – Johnson was on the field A LOT for Miami. His versatility for this defense is vital considering his ability to play in the box and the injury concerns at linebacker.
S Rayshawn Jenkins – Active night for Jenkins with 5 tackles, an interception, and .5 sack. He had a violent hit in the third quarter as well.
DT R.J. McIntosh – McIntosh blocked a punt in the first quarter (Miami’s second of the season
**Gerald Willis made his Miami debut today after being suspended for the first game. He recorded a sack in the fourth quarter.
**Linebacker Darrion Owens saw his first game action since suffering a severe knee injury against FAU last season. He recorded one tackle in the first quarter.
**Sophomore CB Mike Jackson made the first meaningful play of his Canes career tonight in the third quarter against FAU, deflecting a pass that led to a Rayshawn Jenkins interception. Jackson was lined up in the slot on the play. FAU running back Greg Howell ran Jackson over on the Owls’ next possession on his way to a long TD run.
**Miami kicker Michael Badgley had his first attempt of the game blocked (24-yards) and then knocked in a 27-yarder early in the third quarter.
**The Canes were sloppier with penalties this week than last. Against FAMU, Miami conceded 6 penalties for 54 yards. This week vs. FAU – 9 for 90 yards.
**Miami punter Justin Vogel had a big night for the Canes, averaging 47.4 yards per attempt on 5 punts.
**Braxton Berrios had 3 punt returns for a total of 17 yards.
**Sophomore offensive lineman Tyree St. Louis saw some time at left tackle tonight.
**Miami moves to 2-0 and will face Appalachian State next week in Boone, N.C. Kickoff set for noon.
