CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes have a long tradition of homegrown talent showcasing itself on the football field.
Canes legends like Michael Irvin, Sean Taylor, Jonathan Vilma, Santana Moss and Bennie Blades are just a handful of South Florida natives who shined while donning Miami’s orange and green.
Over the course of the 2013 football season, HurricaneSports.com will honor a Hurricane football player with South Florida ties as the Milam’s Market Homegrown Athlete of the Week. This week’s player spotlight is Miami native Eduardo Clements.
He may list Miami as his hometown, but Eduardo Clements is proud to represent a section of the city known as Overtown.
The senior running back from Booker T. Washington High in the heart of Overtown is so proud of his roots that he honors them in his nickname, “OT”.
Clements, who amassed 50 touchdowns and more than 3,000 yards in his four years playing for the Tornadoes, is one of the best players ever to come out of Booker T. Washington High.
The 5-foot-9 back was recruited nationally, but he knew he wanted to continue to represent his hometown and be a Hurricane.
Clements joins a long list of Canes who came to the University of Miami from Booker T. Washington, including Brandon Harris, Antonio Dixon, Chavez Grant and Davon Johnson.
Like the Tornadoes before him, Clements has played a key role in several Miami games. He scored the first touchdown of the 2012 season, rushing into the end zone against Boston College. Clements also added a score in the Hurricanes’ win over Bethune-Cookman that year.
Clements scored his first career touchdown in the 2011 season, but he has been a contributor since his freshman season. The Miami native played primarily on special teams in 2010, but has earned an increased role as a reserve back over his career.
A senior leader, Clements has overcome obstacles to get where he is today. After appearing in 12 contests in each of his first two seasons, an upper extremity injury limited to just seven games a year ago. But Clements worked hard to regain his health and was cleared to return to action prior to the 2013 season and made his season debut against FAU.
The veteran back has helped the Canes get off to a strong start this season and will look to continue helping on and off the field in 2013.
