Let's look at the University of Georgia's defense (FML, this is what it's come down to I guess)
They hired Todd Grantham as DC in 2009, he runs the 3-4 defense (completely changing their previous scheme).
2009, they end up 8-5 with a mediocre defense
2010, they end up 6-7 with a disaster of a defense
But then, they magically have the #6 defense in the country in 2011. How?
The biggest reason is them finally having the defensive line (more specifically the Nose Guard) to run it.
They brought in JC Jon Jenkins (6'4" - 360lb) and he immediately made their defense strong as **** up the middle. They also had Kwame Geathers (6'6" - 355) to plug up the middle of the line. Kwame was not Juco, but a solid sophomore who looks even better this season as a Junior.
Everything else fell into place for them defensively. They've always had the great LB's/DB's, but they really struggled in the first couple of years transitioning into the 3-4 defense.
Now I realize we're not a complete 3-4, but it is still a complete scheme change from what both teams previously ran. I've even read that we may be transitioning to more and more 3-4 looks as time goes on.
Will we have similar success? Probably not (UGA has really recruited well, especially defensively), but it does offer at least a little hope. It also backs up what a few of you have been saying:
1) Go JUCO
2) Be patient
3) Having a stud DL, especially DT's, will make our entire defense look drastically better in a hurry
