This year's 5A state championship game between Miami Central and Merritt Island features two names that should be familiar with each other and familiar to Cane fans:

Roland Smith (Miami Central) and Hurlie Brown (Merritt Island)

Love to see two DB's from the same recruiting class (1987 Smith out of Northwestern and Brown out of Merritt Island) coaching the next generation of Florida football players at a high level almost a quarter century later.

If the state and local sports media don't cover this angle and ask them about their time together at Miami and get some good stories they're missing out.

Merrit Island gotta be in on that recruiting game because I have family that lives there and...let's just say it's not exactly an "athletic" area.
Agree. Cocoa gets all the athletes in the area followed by rockledge.

Merritt Island backed in the day was a powerhouse: there big rival was Fort Pierce Central, those games were always sell outs.
They had Leon Bright, Waldo Williams, and a QB named Jimmy Black. Central had the Latimer brothers, and Eddie Edwards. some serious football on the Treasure and Space Coast
