BOCA RATON - Florida Atlantic will be without three starters when the Owls open the season tonight at Miami, a source has told OwlAccess.com.
Wide receiver Daniel McKinney and tight end Darion Howard are among five Owls who will be suspended for the opener for an unspecified violation of team rules. Safety Winfred Strickland will miss the game while he recovers from a head injury.
Reserve running back Damian Fortner, defensive tackle Lance Burlingame and long snapper Stephen Curtis will also have to sit out against the Hurricanes.
The good news for the Owls is that defensive end Marin Wright is expected to play. He's been dealing with a knee injury for the past couple of weeks.
McKinney started eight games last season and was the Owls second-leading receiver, catching 48 passes for 497 yards and two touchdowns.
Howard transferred to FAU from the University of Northern Iowa and quickly climbed the depth chart during fall camp, ultimately replacing veterans Nexon Dorvilus and Alex DeLeon atop the depth chart.
Burlingame, a redshirt freshman, had been working with the second-team defense in the final weeks of camp.
Curtis started the the 2012 season-opener at quarterback but was pulled at halftime after ineffective play. He began the fall as part of what was thought to be a three-way quarterback battle but moved to special teams early in camp. Like Curtis, Fortner's biggest contributions were expected to come on special teams.
Without McKinney, FAU will likely look to JUCO transfer Lucky Whitehead or sophomore Jenson Stoshak as slot receivers. Dorvilus and DeLeon will see extra snaps at tight end.
With Strickland missing practices this week, Jeremy McKnight had been working with the first team.
