"Figueroa surprises himself in weight room"

- Talks about how he has exceeded expectations from the second he stepped on campus

- Measures in at 6'3 231 lbs.

- Benching 315 lbs. and power cleaning 286 lbs.

- Wants his weight to be at 235-240 range to start the season

- Working hard with Swasey to get his strength numbers up before the season

- Trying to make the best of his situation and not let it slip away from him

- He's working hard to perfect his technique

- Trying to master the SAM position before he starts to move around a little bit more

- Thinks his intensity and leadership qualities is what caught Golden's eye

- He feels that he has the ability to make plays

- Says he leads by his actions rather than just talk

I am excited to see what this kid can do.

Seems like he can step in right away and make up for the loss of Eddie "Motherf*ckin" Johnson.

Knowing his background, this is one kid I'm not worried about bot busting his ***.

With this guy, Perryman and Kirby, we should be pretty good at the LB position.

Just need Porter and Pierre to stay healthy so these guys can roam free and merk people.

I actually like they way our defense looks. It's the depth that is still a bit concerning. Bad enough we had to overcome the past regime's recruiting blunders. Knuckleheads like Eddie Johnson and co. make it worse. We could really use a kid like EJ in case one of these guys goes down at some point.

I like all of our starters (except DE), but it's the JAGs we have backing them up that worries me.

A perfect example, thus far, of how a strong upbringing can effect a kid. He appears mature beyond his years, just like Duke Johnson.
Too many people overlook the importance of "between the ears" of these kids.

Dont sleep on Gaines in the Middle. I think he is going to play a lot and play well. He will slow down Kirby from getting too much work just yet. However, Kirb looks to be a good one as well. I just think the advantage Gaines has is his mental game at this point. I see Kirb, being a nickel backer. But at the end of last yr Gaines looked like a very solid guy against the run.

I totally agree with you Ridler, it is the pedestrian backups that are going to hole this team back. If this team gets held back at all! Hopefully guys are learning and are ready to step up when called upon.

6'3" 235? Wonder how much good weight he can carry? If he can get to 245-250 and not lose a step, wow!

This kid could be exactly what we need. Seems to have all of the physicality and intensity of EJ, but with the added bonus of having discipline and leadership.

Gaines is average at best.

He's alright. I don't mind him out there. Not much a playmaker but usually hes at least in the right position and makes the plays that come to him. At DT and LB, thats about all we can ask for off the bench. Takes time to build depth.

Problem is he is a starter and contributes alot on the field. We have too many guys who get burn who arent "playmakers" on this defense. Someone needs to step the **** up. Dammit

I never expect him to be a difference maker. But he was playing some solid ball towards the end of last season. IMO he is the type of player you can count on to not take a step backwards and build off his progress. I envision Gaines and Kirby doing a lot of rotating at the MIKE spot this season. And I'm ok with it.

We'll see on Gaines. Everyone forgets how young he is, even though he's senior he's younger than some of the other guys. I'd like to know how he's doing in the weight room.

I have a feeling Kirby is going to take that MLB spot and Gaines will be a swing LB that can play all 3 spots if needed.
